OH, and the diff. between a properly tuned valve amp and one with something wonky going on can be NIGHT and DAY. Don't give up on that Sound City until its brought up to spec. then decide if you want to mod it further...

If i recall correctly, the faulty valve was V3, right before the EL34 power stage... so that was the phase inverter in my case, correct?
I'm not sure which was the bad one for me. I swapped all the preamp tubes at once. I did put in a correct gain NOS (12AU7) phase inverter in mine as a part of it. It previously had a 12AX7 in that position as well, not sure if that'd screw with headroom too.
If anyone knows about 60's/70's SUNN valve amps, would you please chime in here...

My current tube rig - although it seems to break up pretty early, it's hard to gauge just how loud I actually am in the basement.
I plugged in my Jackson Rhodes into it to hear guitar crunch on it....holy HELL that was LOUD!!!

Indeed a bad tube will impact any amp - that's why I suggested getting the thing working properly before trying to re-engineer it.
Mike, I'm still drooling over that amp... playing through it was a bad mistake for a self (under) employed guy ...
So, this afternoon I brought home an Epi Valve Jr...our GC had one still factory-boxed for $99 and I bit. Amazing tone with my Tronographic Rusty Box in front of it!

its one of the best amps to use with pedals cos it means the pedals do most the tone

I'm not sure I'm totally happy with how the christmas tree contributes to the rig's tone just yet.
My other contribution (the Elk) is about two feet to the left on top of a 410 and 115 which I do not pair together.

It'll do more than a little if you let it. I was getting some amazing results. I had one if the most aggressive pick tones (Ric 4001) I've ever heard and it wasn't harsh either. With fingers it actually approximated an SVT or other fat/round bottomed tuber in overdrive quite well without trying to tweak it in that direction. Overall, it kept the all the beef and snarly mids because of running the dedicated OD setup.
The Genz will probably be gone by the time you get here.
I will so miss that cab. The tone was oh so good and I never ever made it fart, even with my 1001RB-II running hard or SVT-II dimed. The size just too big to load in my family car sedan...
An 810e fits on the backseat but the GB is 2" too deep to go through the door without breaking anything. I can fit my upright in the car too! Just not my favorite cab. Argh! Maybe I'll hang on to it for long enough to see if I can use it for the band that I might be forming tomorrow.
