Hi there... this is my baby. (please add me too)
A 1995 Yamaha TRB6 - the made in Japan, side by side single coil Alnico pickups. I've wanted to trade this in on something a little more user friendly (I have small hands) but there just isn't anything I've found that comes close to the sound of this awesome instrument!

Here's my beast - a defretted ESP LTD D6, equipped with Schaller strap locks. I'm probably going to look into replacing the tuners with lightweight models and the bridge with something nicer, along with having the body drilled for string-through...stringing. I've seen a lot of Hipshot A-style bridges on basses in this thread, what bridge do you other guys use and how do you like it? I'd like to modify this bass to its fullest potential so I don't mind spending the money on something higher-end. I was looking at bridges last week and figure I'll need something rather narrow - the string spacing is only 3 3/16" (8.1 cm) from the outermost string diameters - so right around .59" core to core, and the smallest spcing available for the Hipshot A is .656". I would actually welcome the slightly larger spacing, but I still need something narrow enough to keep the strings away from the edge of the neck.

Thanks, man! The string spacing on the fretless is 14mm at the bridge using a Kahler 7460 bass bridge that allows you to adjust the spacing (the fretted bass has string spacing of 13.6mm using single string bridges).

I just don't like playing 6-string basses with necks like a surfboard, so getting close string spacing is one of my prerequisites. I've seen guys on talkbass say that string spacing that close is "unplayable" but that's silly, a classical guitarist plays with slightly closer string spacing and that's no problem.

I play finger-style and I even can slap and pop with this string spacing (although I've never put much time into that technique). I can play stuff that would be virtually impossible on a 6-string with normal string spacing. Gerald Veasley plays with string spacing like that too, it makes playing a 6-string a hell of a lot easier, imo.

What's the string spacing at the nut end of these basses?

Carles Benavent plays a 5-stringer with 14mm spacing at the bridge.

I'm with you man. I never really got why 19mm is such a popular string spacing for so many especially those that play finger style. I think I'd probably prefer 16-17mm for fretted basses and 14 sound perfect on a fretless.

The funny part is that both of my current basses, which I love to pieces, are 19mm :D. Maybe I'll see what I can do to fix that sometime in the future.

Well, I think if you dig playing chords on your 6-string than you will find it helps things out immensely bringing the strings in closer. Also if you like to play fast runs.

Since I'm a bass player of questionable taste, I like to play both chords and fast runs so I need that string spacing closer. ;)

Here's my Carvin LB76 and GK rig. I've had this bass for almost 20 years. It's the favorite of my small "harem". I don't have any high-end basses, but they get the job done.
