$75 or we'll let your house burn down

Jim Campbell, how many real fires have you put out? As in REAL fires?

To the topic in general: If, after the lessons learned here, policy was written that everyone regardless of payment status will get fire service in a crisis then why should ANYONE pay?

Doesn't matter how many warnings he may have gotten to pay the fee. There is nothing the FD can say or do to make themselves right on not putting out a fire and watching the house burn to the ground. There should be certain services that ALL citizens get with no thought of a do not service list. This and law enforcement are 2 that instantly come to mind.

I don't agree with this on any level. Freeloading (IMHO) citizens are NOT entitled to anything that OTHER citizens have to pay for. I (IMHO) pay for enough crap like food for death row inmates and medical for illegals that the thought of extending that down the "free services ladder" to people refusing to pay for fire protection service but then wanting it just enflames me.

What's Tommy Lee Jones have to do with this? [I saw that film, but forgot the title and plot.........a little help?]

The movie's No Country for Old Men.

I just happen to think that face sums up the emotion/thought process "you can't be serious. That's totally ****** ********" rather well.

But this is rapidly devolving into the standard Strict Libertarian vs. Sanity argument, and I'm out.

Is there any info on how he managed to escape the fire, but how the animals didn't make it? I hope I'm wrong but leaving them inside to assume action from a service you haven't paid for once in 18 years is an .... nah, I'm wrong, forget it, noone would do something like that would they.....and I don't know how he escaped that fire so.

oh please.....hosing down a fire is not that hazardous.....the average convenience store clerk faces more danger .....were not talking skyscrapers and ladder rescues.....firing up a pump is not that big a deal.....
rescue ???? from what i read these dudes wouldn't even pee on it if they didn't get their 75 bux.....these clowns are an insult to every fireman everywhere....you know, the ones that actually put out fires, rescue folks.......

How could I forget? I love that film.

Strict Libertarian vs. Sanity argument

As a libertarian, I'll offer up this thought:

A draconian mechanics lien ["attached" to the title] for those foolish enough not to take responsibility.

Just had to get a cheap shot in on those who disagree with you before you left, huh?

Strict Libertarianism doesn't work on any level beyond the smallest of communities, just like Communism. I don't want to waste words on people who may not understand that.

not saying that you or bassrique are part of that group, for the record, just explaining myself. I'll gladly do the "til we're blue in the face" thing with you guys. :)

Do you rock up to your job every day if the pay isn't coming in?

Do you do your job every day regardless of the pay never coming in because "Its the right thing to do", and then one day get sick of your boss demanding that you work harder (despite not being paid) so figure you will just take the day off instead to teach him a lesson.

Now I don't know the background, but i'd just about guarantee these guys have put out fires for people who say "Why should I pay the fee", and they likely do so on their own free time.

Every once in a while someone gets made example of, turn out it was not this guys lucky day.

it really is not the same thing.....there's just something about a burning building that needs immediate attention, and sort out the details later......i suppose you would prefer that smokers, not be eligible for cancer treatment, fat guys denied insulin, drunks don't get livers.....maybe those who can't drive should not get state run bus rides, public schools, maybe go back to the diy militias,as the army eats up tax money......

if you've never driven on a state funded highway you,or attended a public building you might have a point, but those days are long gone.....the notion that fire trucks will only attend to fires with their own logos went out with the five points gang......

Why education? Surely you could just pay for what school you go to and that would cover it? Same with police. I mean, if you have to pay a toll every time you drive on a road, and have to pay every time you walk on the footpath, surely paying to go to school, or paying the cops when they show up isn't any worse?

IMO More taxes = More public services = better.

Im going to stop talking before I get all political.

If only it worked that way.

I rather think this converstation took place the day before:

Wife: "Honey, did you pay that fee that insures the fire department will come out to our house when it burns down?"
Husband: "Nah. Why I should I pay 75 dollars? Those clown's jobs is to put out fires, not get paid. Besides, this house hasn't caught on fire yet, so why worry?"

...and there you go.

Also, why was "forgot" put in quotations? I mean, I say forgot like that when I deliberately didn't do something.

Oh, and why does this guy think he is an exception to the rules? and why didn't he try to save his cat?

do you walk past your friends and neighbors and tell them tough noogies.....

I said it earlier, but it's worth repeating. This is not the first time these people have had a fire, caused by their own stupidity and they didn't pay the bill then. The fire department put the fire out that time. Obviously if they continued to put these people's fires out for free, nobody else would pay either. Guess what, no funds, no fire department.
