Hey folks! We'll play a gig in a month and we just got a request to play a couple of funky/disco 80s songs.
I don't know any songs from that time (or at least I can't think of any).

Our band is: drums, bass, piano, sax, vocals

So do you know some good songs in that style that work without guitar?

    I'd appreciate some suggestions.

Haha! I actually forgot about Michael Jackson! :D

Thanks for the links. Especially the second one.

No offense, but I could have used google myself ;)

I see it's my fault, sorry. I should have mentioned, that I was looking more for your personal favourites of that time and style, preferably songs that aren't too well known, cause we want to play stuff that's new for most people, be it unknown songs or completely different versions of well known stuff (like Wonderwall based on a riff Dave Holland played during a drum solo...).

We'll probably have to play some of these hits, but I am looking for stuff that is less known.

    Thanks anyway!
  4. Smooth Criminal by MJ, it will always go over well.

  5. I don't know about Disco from the 80's. I'm pretty sure it
    had died off by then.

Bands like ABC were pretty cool. The 80's were weird.
There is a lot of dance stuff but most of it is pretty lame IMO.

Don't get me wrong I grew up in the 80's and it was a great
time for great music. It's just IMO the stuff kids danced to sucked.

If you wanna groove and take advantagr of your band I say ABC.

Oh..... Duran Duran is a good one too.

Kajagoogoo? some bass lines were amazing there (I know some of them are not bass per se but Nick Beggs' stick).

  7. Men at Work - Who can it be now
  8. Funky Ghost

    Funky Ghost Translucently Groovy

Double Dutch Bus - Frankie Smith
Genius of Love - Tom Tom Club
Let the Music Play - Shannon
    Breakout - Swingout Sister
    Cry - Waterfront

Those all seemed to go over well a long time ago. Guitar is optional on those I'd think. Sax can pull down the small guitar bits
  9. Eddy Grant-Electric Avenue
Funky Cold Medina - Tone Loc another one from this guy Wild thing
Bust A Move - Young MC

    decent songs back then

PigBag, The Piranhas and Bow Wow Wow all had hits with nice horn parts.

Oh, and how about Toni Basil?
