A lot of misconceptions have been bandied about this thread.
Loudspeaker beaming?.
All loudspeakers beam from a certain frequency up, however many you have. The larger the loudspeaker generally the lower the frequency the loudspeaker begins to beam at.
Even if you have a Tweeter the chances are in bass gear that it's a high pass only, that still allows the woofer to run full range and beam all over the room.
Comb filtering? all loudspeakers outside of anechoic chambers exhibit comb filtering because of room reflections.
If you move multiple loudspeakers away from each other you will be able to measure increased comb filtering effects at various points in the room.
This is why single vertical loudspeaker arrays exhibit less comb filtering than widely horizontal placement of sound sources.
The widely spaced front of house PA system is in no way exempt from producing bad comb filtering effects, in fact the point source of a powerful but compact on stage rig carrying the room is less likely to produce bad comb filtering FX.
Mixing loudspeaker cone sizes and comb filtering effects due to frequency dependant non coincident phase twists?.
While the difference in cone sizes theoretically produces differences in phase angles dependant on frequency, the facts are that assuming the loudspeakers are in similar polarity, voice coil alignment and designed to be operated full range and have quite similar frequency responses like the difference between an agile bright sounding 15" mounted vertically with a 10" loudspeaker which is designed for the same or even slightly lower fundamental resonance.
Surprisingly may not actually exhibit any measurable comb filtering outside of an anechoic chamber and can be less of a comb filtering issue than say operating a pair of similar drivers mounted closely horizontally.
Obviously the moment that the sound is collected from either different loudspeaker size, assuming that the collection mic's are placed in phase relative to the different size drivers or for that matter a DI is taken to the front of house.
far, far hugely far greater phase anomalies will exist between a well spaced stereo front of house in various places in the room and the on stage rig and any stage monitors whatever size loudspeakers are involved.
So having left the anechoic chamber, land of theory and idiotic dogma that plagues this board, If you have followed what I have said, we have mutually discovered that it doesn't make a discernible difference in practice at a real gig.
So whatever the music tech lecturer who can't get gainful employment in his chosen profession outside of a class room, where he spouts dogmatic ******** all day long says, there are just far too many other variables in a practical live situation for it to really matter at all.
Finally! in my experience however loud the bass amplification system is capable of getting and however many loudspeakers of all sizes it may contain, I have so far in the last 45 years as a professional, never found a rig, that is not equipped with some sort of level or volume control.
Surprisingly! you can even have more than one single coil pickup on your bass too!!!? and mix them via individual capacitive resistive tone controls, although then we really are talking about radical frequency dependant complex phase anomalies.
