916 Pickups Club

Yes. The large Slant/T40 magnet order never happened so I used 4 of the magnets used in jazz bass SF 4 / seven string guitar flank.
Is there a big tonal difference between the big ass magnet and the smaller magnets? If the gauss ends up the same, it should yield similar tonal results? I have no idea what I’m talking about so please correct me.

I don't think the gauss will be that different. My goal is to make the pickup as close to the original. There will always be give and take. The music man covers is just a smidge too small to accept 4 full size mags. I tried. Using 3 full size mags brings the two coils too close together. The best I could come up with is what you see. The thinner mags also allow for a rear cover. It's as close to a double SF as I can come up with. I always show you guys under the hood so you can look and see , then decide if your good with what I came up with

Haha, as if my input is worth spit!

All I know is your workmanship is great, and if it sounds good it is good!

Hi folks! Like the U.S. Peavey Club, I'm going to start to require pics of your 916 equipped basses for entry into the club (only because I'm greedy to see your awesome basses! :bassist:...thanks @ctmullins and @Runnerman for already posting pics here!)...or, if you have a project that is in process and will soon have pics available, I'll let you in too (with the agreement that pics will follow). I know many of your have posted pics of your basses with 916 pickups in other threads (I'm thinking of you @Green Knight!)...please post those pics here too if you are willing/able.

Here's my one 916 equipped bass so far (I have many more projects to come and many 916 pickups in my possession ready to be plopped into them):

916 pickups on my pickup shelf or in flight that will be used in projects this/next year:
Anyone else want to share their 916 pickup shelf for their projects?

I have been playing my fiver with 916 SF exposed blades almost exclusively. Combined with the Lusithand double filter preamp, it just sounds fantastic for everything.

I have another set of 916 SF without exposed blades waiting to go into a build, once I can muster the energy to begin the building!

I’m also intrigued with the 916 P90s….

Annnnnnd now I'm going down the Lisithand filter pre rabbit hole...would this make my Modded Rudy Sarzo with VFLs sound better than the Aggy OBP-3 I'm fighting with?!:wideyed:

The Monkeys are copys of Iommis pickups from the Monkey SG. Normally they come in Nickel Silver covers with nickel silver baseplates. I'm guessing they were built that way to shield the P90. If you don't want the metal covers I just shield the pickup to keep in line with the Iommi pickups and use a standard Gibson style cover , black , cream , white.

The Monkeys are not really Hot/Overwound the resistance change is from being wound with smaller wire. The English seems to love #44awg while Americans use a lot of #42. Also back then there was no high gain amps yet , so if you wanted to push the pre amp it was with higher resistance and / or over winding. This is the sound you hear on all the Sabbath albums up to Technical Ecstasy. After that it's the Old Boy pickups

You definitely have more firsts of anyone when it comes to bass pickups. Guitar stuff goes to my good friend Dean , he's not on talk bass. I'm going to try and get him in here

Ooh love it!!
I have a set of Gibson P90s in a guitar now, and they’re pretty good, but not RWRP. So I was looking at maybe Matt’s Monkey set, but I need more info from him….
I love it! If you end up with 916s in your guitar, I want to see pics of that too (I’m also a huge Iommi fan and like P90-style pickups in general).

@Matt Kustom, Dean needs to get on here and show his 916 equipped guitars…I also love Nita Strauss, so Dean is doubly cool to me. :bassist::bassist::bassist:

There is no “bass only” snobbery in this thread.

I'm trying to get Dean in here , he has many guitars and like 5 basses all loaded with 916. He has almost one of everything for guitar. All his basses are Neodymium P/J soap bars.

He also has two custom painted/modified Ibanez guitars I did for him. Matching 1966 Riddler and Batman guitars. I do custom builds / paint / mods occasionally for friends.

I’ve seen some of it on your Insta…he’s definitely got some cool stuff to show!

Thanks! So how would you describe the tonal differences between the Monkeys and your normal P90s? I’m looking for a little more fatness and a little more snarl (and RWRP, of course).

The Snarl comes in from the extra resistance. Maybe fatter , not sure. I have played a few factory A5 P90 but do not care for them. For some reason P90 really seem to benefit from higher resistance. All the P90s I have here are #44 , it just works. If you can tell me about what Amp you plan on running (EL34 or 6L6) and music you play I can dial you in. The Monkey is perfect if your trying to get early Sabbath , but if Sabbath is not your main goal I can match the P90 to your exact needs. The P90s are always hum canceling. South bridge , North neck with polarity switched
