a band asked me to join

Oh, I almost forgot, as soon as your done with that, since it will only take you a couple minutes, go ahead and figure out a few Spiral Architect songs, and record yourself playing along:

Honestly, please, prove to the world metal is a completely thoughtless genre... what was it you said, "metal music are for "musicians" that are technically limited, or dont care on improving. it is the easiest type of music to play" Ok, seriously, vids of you playing along to a Necrophagist song or two, then maybe Insect by Spiral Architect. ASAP please.

If I remember about 50 years ago many people reacted to the Beatles much the same as you're reacting to these guys. Same goes with Metallica about 25 years ago.

we're comparing them to the Beatles??

LOL

I gotta say. This genre of music has it's followers but it will never be anything more than a fringe part of rock. It will never have mass appeal. Not wide, sustained appeal. Never.

And yeah, the Beatles had "mass appeal"

Actually metal does have a pretty darn big fan base both in the U.S. and worldwide. It's been like that for a while too. You are hearing more and more metal bands on the radio and seeing more of it on TV. I'm not talking "mall metal" either, I'm talking straight up metal bands.

Well, let me tell you, I might be an old fart, but, that Spiral Architect, "spinning" has got a pretty phat grove if you ask me, and I'm not up on the metal scene.

As far as the original post goes, I thought the harmony was great, hehe!!!

You're using "metal" as much too broad a term. Metallica has a much more radio friendly sound than the "scream core" stuff being discussed.

Yea, I agree some metal is totally not radio friendly. But that goes for every genre of music. There are alot of rock bands out there that are not radio friendly either. I think what I was trying to say is that there is some really heavy (but good) stuff out there now that is being played on the radio and on TV.

I was just trying to argue the point that was made saying that metal will never have mass appeal, because I think it does in it's own way. But I agree that it will never have mass appeal like the Beatles.

And just to clarify - I'm not a metal head.....:D

Metallica has sold over 100 Million albums worldwide, over 55 million in America alone.

Van Halen has sold over 50 Million albums in the US alone

Iron Maiden has sold over 70 Million albums World Wide

Judas Priest has sold over 30 Million albums World Wide

they are not that extreme, but those four bands have sold WAY OVER 250 Million albums together.

When it comes to extremes

CANNIBAL CORPSE: 558,929
DEICIDE: 481,131
MORBID ANGEL: 445,147
SIX FEET UNDER: 370,660
OBITUARY: 368,616
DEATH: 368,184
NAPALM DEATH: 367,654
CARCASS: 220,734
ENTOMBED: 198,764

The top-selling death metal albums of the SoundScan era are as follows:

MORBID ANGEL - "Covenant" (1993): 127,154
DEICIDE - "Deicide" (1990): 110,719*
DEICIDE - "Legion" (1992): 103,544
OBITUARY - "The End Complete" (1992): 103,378
CANNIBAL CORPSE - "The Bleeding" (1994): 98,319

*note - Most Death Metal albums don't get sold through large chain stores, so many of the album sales can't be counted through soundscan

When it comes to Metalcore and Hardcore

Trivium certified gold with Ascendancy and Silver with The Crusade in the UK

All That Remains has sold well over 100,000 albums in the us, and peaking on the US Billboard charts at 75

Lamb of G-d has sold over 1.1 Million albums in America, Peaking at Billboard Chart # 8

Chimaira has sold over 200,000 Albums in the US

And without regard to specific genres

Pantera, Megadeth, Slayer, KoRn, and SlipKnoT have each sold MILLIONS OF ALBUMS

so obviously they are fairly popular ( including many extreme metal bands ), and have sold very well

Metal has been around since the late 60's/early 70's and still sells well, has a strong following, and is literally growing every day.

Ozzfest is ONE of the biggest and best selling festivals every year, if not the biggest.

The Tuska Open Air Metal Festival is a huge festival in Norway that shares the stage with many extreme metal bands

Another huge metal festival, with mostly Extreme Metal Bands is the Wacken Air Festival

So I have just proved ( whoever it was ) wrong about Metal not going to last, and just being on the fringes of rock.

Metal is its own genre with its own fans, and it is huge, even without as much air play as rock and pop.

And so you all know, screaming, growling, and even pig squeals take practice to do PROPERLY. Sure, these kids on youtube can do them, sure your grandma could do them, but how long do you think they can do it without losing their voice or permanently damaging their throat?

My singer, Malcolm, spent years working on his screams. When he began he sounded worse than the fatty in the youtube band we all made fun of, but he learned to sing and worked on screaming and his range, and now he is the most versatile screamer I know. He has a broader range in pitch for screams and growls than most SINGERS I have ever heard, EVER. This includes professional and unprofessional. He also has more control than almost any singer I have ever heard. He can choose how gritty or clear he wants his voice, and he can control his volume, from quiet to ear-piercingly loud, without a mic. He can go straight from All That Remains to Cannibal Corpse to Cradle of Filth right into Metallica at the drop of a hat.

And, if I haven't mentioned already, he can sing as well.

And not all metal is screaming anyway.

And obviously, there are decent metal bands and bad ones, same with rock. Saying all metal bands sound like that fatty's band from youtube is like saying all rock bands have as much talent as nirvana.

I am going to give all the nay-sayers a challenge. Watch each of the videos below, and find three other bands of each genre and sub-genre listed. Only after that will you have discovered a small portion of the tip of the ice-berg that is metal. And after that, compare those bands to the original band that we were all laughing at.

* note - You will hear similarities between some of the bands first in the list, but also many obvious differences.

* note - this list is very incomplete. There are dozens more sub-genres but I have been sitting here an hour finding example videos.

And as I said the list is very incomplete, there are other genre's such as hardcore, post-modern hardcore, death grind, technical death metal, southern metal, operatic metal, etc.

and btw, I started this post at about 2:00 and it is now 3:44

Ta for that list - some interesting stuff there.

personally speaking, there are too many sub-genres of the death/black metal side of things in your list, and I`ll disagree on how you have classified some of the stuff - but interesting all the same.

+91231234123851478967813679034678356972746245 on just about everything you said. i couldnt defend the genre any better if i tried.

Wow, what's with all the classifications and sub-genres? How very precious. :eyebrow:

And what's with the guys "singing" like they're choking on something? I mean, Iron Maiden was bad enough with the high-pitched screeching, but now we get throat-clearing? Yogurt gargling?

I like Sabbath as much as the next guy, but they played actual songs, not over-the-top, super-aggro, juvenile, domination-fantasy wankfests. Well, OK, they did, but this is just going too far... :D

Don't take this the wrong way. I don't think anyone is an idiot for liking this stuff, I just can't understand how anyone can listen to Necrophagist or the like, and I never will. No, I don't appreciate it for the technical skill. IMHO, skill is worthless for creating art unless it conveys feeling, and I get no feeling from this stuff beyond mindless rage. Like a zombie trying to eat my brains. If that's what you like, then fine. When I want to hear some f*** you, I prefer it in a cocktail... the Stooges or Supersuckers or something with a little sex and drugs and humor and... humanity mixed in.

And really, how many truly hot women (not girls) do you find shaking their booties at these shows? If I want something very technical with no hot chicks dancing, I'll go to a classical recital, at least I'll get some sleep.

No offense, really. Whatever floats your boat, different strokes, yada yada.

:hiding:

It's a case of you get it, or you don't. Nobody is forcing anyone to like metal: At least I hope not. The big uproar was in the doubt that metal musicians had actual talent.

I dislike A LOT of metal, a lot of metal bands that my friends listen to: All sound the same. Necrophagist and other death metal bands I enjoy don't make me angry or want to kill people. I get the feeling from metal that you get from the Stooges or the Supersuckers. The punk like energy, but turned up a few more notches.

But then again, nobody can really explain why anyone likes any music, so who cares? I think metal is suppose to be underground or something anyhoo...

And yeah, the Beatles had "mass appeal"

10 years after they started. Almost every record company turned them down. Martin was looked upon as a bottom of the barrel producer, and Epstein had to practicly give away the publishing rights. That's why the Beatles don't own them and Jaco does. Which is also why you don't see them done on American Idol. Jaco owns almost all of L + M copyrights. Taylor Hicks was able to avoid this with Something because it is a Harrison song and not owned by Jaco. Epstein sold the rights early on for a fraction of what they would have been worth even a couple of years later.

Van Halen? Their peak was more than 20 years ago. Metallica? A 90s band. Def Leppard? Again, heyday more than 20 years ago. ACDC's biggest album was released in 1980. That's 27 years ago. Same with Poison, Motely Crue, etc etc. Sabbath and such? heyday was 30-35 years ago.

Let's talk about what's current, ok? Metal bands aren't even on the radar. It's an underground, sub-genre of music. Hey, I like some of it too, but don't try and pretend that metal is MAINSTREAM in any way shape or form. You may like it. You may go to clubs to see it. But it's NOT mainstream or has mass appeal. The Police are playing huge stadiums this summer. Three Days Grace is playing 1,000 seat venues or smaller.

You want to talk mass appeal? Talk about biggest selling albums. of the 30 biggest selling albums WORLDWIDE of all-time, only two are metal and both from a long time ago - "Back in Black", "Led Zepplin IV". You may count GNR as metal and they had an album that sold around 26 million copies..but again, TWENTY YEARS AGO.

Biggest selling albums in 2006:

1. Soundtrack High School Musical
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
3. The Beatles - Love
4. James Blunt - Back To Bedlam
5. Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds
6. Beyonce - B'Day
7. U2 - U2 18 Singles
8. Rascal Flatts - Me And My Gang

again, metal taking over the world?

There WAS a time when metal was mainstream, but that, my friend is so long ago it's in a different generation.

Metal is great. I love metal. But let's not be delusional here.

I am going to give all the nay-sayers a challenge. Watch each of the videos below, and find three other bands of each genre and sub-genre listed. You want us to watch 27 videos plus find another 81? Good luck with that.
