Do the Lakky J-basses get the Fender sound convincingly, by the way? I've only tried the 55-02, 4-94 and such...and lovede 'em, but I was thinking of picking up a 4-banger a year or two after my upcoming 55-02 order, and it's either going to be a Fender Jazz (probably a 62 RI) or something more exciting but that can nail the sound well...

Yes, both the JO's and DJ's will get you that Fender single coil tone. In my experience, the JO is more true to form for the standard Jazz thing.
The DJ, with the Aero's is pretty hyper. Maybe a little more modern sounding. This is even more intense when the bass is equipped with the J-Retro onboard pre. I had one for awhile in my DJ and it was too hyper for what I wanted, so I went back passive. Just my own preference. I've read a lot from guys that really like them in their basses.
I've played 5, or 6 JO's and in form and function they were definitely single coil, jazz-styled basses. I've heard that the Lindy's really add to their tone, but I'm not sure if of the ones I played any had them.
The thing that steered me to the DJ over the JO was the body size. The DJ is trimmed down and more comfortable for me to play.

I went to the shop to try out a few lakkies to-day. I concentrated on putting a 55-02 through its paces because that's probably what I'm gong to buy, but there was a Skyline DJ 5 there and I decided I'd check out what arcopizz said about the hyperness. Well, the axe had one of the worst fret jobs I have ever played. It buzzed all over the place. Even the 55-02 had a few rough edges on the sides of the frets, though no buzzing.
I still want the bass, but I'm wondering what I'm getting myself into... cleaning up the frets shouldn't be too big a problem, especially if that's going to be covered under warranty, but do a lot of them arrive with these issues? The US-built Lakky I tried was obviously exquisite...

My "hyper/on steroids" DJ with J retro SHOULD be here in 2-3 weeks.....really looking forward to it.....when I get a chance to play it, I will give ya'll my thoughts (and some pictures).....I bought it on reputation alone (i.e. I never played one before but heard sooooo many good things about them)....

It was probably due to a lack of humidity ....wood shrunk and neck needed adjustment...No Biggie, but store should have a good humidifier going this time of year.
They are both great basses and I'm sure you'd love them after they were properly set up
Hey BP, I played a used, pearl/RW Skyline DJ the other night at the Halsted GC. I was very impressed (although the action was set too low for me) with its playability, sound and looks. If I ever get a J, I'll seriously consider that model.
I just rejoined the Lakland family after a few yours off! I purchased a beautiful 55-76 with Seymour Duncan... black, white guard, birdseye board. It's beautiful! It is being set-up and the guard is being installed. I'll post a picture when I get it back from the shop.
It played beautifully, and is MUCH closer to a MM tone (due to the Seymour and the 'exact MM' pickup placement) than my old 55-94 (even after I replaced the old Barts with Seymours). Very cool.
Can anyone tell me what the body material is? I believe it's alder, since it's the 'solid color/pickguard' version. However, I guess it might be ash since it's supposed to cop the Music Man vibe very closely. It is extremely aggressive, which suggests ash.... however, I can't really tell.

Yeah, since this bass came with the pickguard not installed, I'm not sure if it's considered a 'classic', which are listed as Alder on the website, or a 'standard', which are listed as having ash bodies.
Not a big deal, more curious than anything. I'll post a picture when I pick it up late next week.
I forgot how unusual those 'mini frets' are on the Laklands. I don't notice the small frets at all when playing, but they really look different!
Edit: Looking at the site, solid colors are only offered on the classics... so Alder it is!

Very nice. Most of these 'online' vids have crappy tone. But yours sounds great just on the video--so it must sound killer in real life!

I'm serious -- I'm not trying to be a smarta$$ or start a flame war -- and I think the world of Laklands. As someone who sold/traded Laklands to get Sadowskys, I'm just curious about your reasoning. Was it sound? Feel? Appropriateness for the music you play?
