I own (2) 55-94's and if you like Daddario's I reccomend stringing THUR the body and checking out Lakland SS strings in a medium light guage. you think you've got a nice bass now..... It enters and adds an all new spectrum!

It enters and adds an all new spectrum! The Dadarrios I usually buy won't reach through the body on the A and E strings. I've been meaning to check out the Lakland strings. I know when I first bought the bass the strings that came on it were awesome.

I have a DJ4 with J-retro on the way...currently my Ric is the "first string", but I think it may go to second string once the DJ gets here (another 3-4 weeks or so)....who knows, they do sound so differnet....also, I have a 55-02 on order, when that comes all is up for grabs!!!!
I like the deep and focused Tone I get from the Lakland. It's a really versatile Bass.
Sounds a lot different than my Ric. I still love the Ric wnd will not depart from it, but I really dig the playability, fast neck and the J Bass configuration.
You can tell Lakland's quality is behind this superb fret job done on the DJ4.

I dunno. I hate(d) that weird headstock, but decided I wanted a 55-02 anyway, and now I'm kind of coming around on it. I like that fact that it's *not* fender-y, although I really like a 4:1 headstock as well.
And that 3:2 headstock probably reduces neck dive... Anyone care to comment on that?
Give that Ric all the love you can before you get the DJ4 and 55-02. I can't wait to see your Amber/RW 55-02.

I've been in love with Laklands ever since I had a 55-01 Skyline. I now have this droolworthy 4-94 and my life is complete.

I just played a DJ5 bass this morning at Lauzon music store !
Simply said, it's the bass I felt the most comfortable to play on a 5 String and it might be the one for me !!!!
I also played the USA models they had over there and the other sklines, all using the TA503 Markbass amp, which is a good upgrade from the LMK11 head in my opinion.
Definitely, I am looking to buy another Lakland in the near future.

My Lakie is a 4-94, bought off Ebay for $1500. It was in fairly good shape, almost no dings to the body, perfect frets, etc. There's a bit of rusting on the rings of the pots, and the bridge is a bit oxidized, but I don't care. This thing is incredible. It has the lowest action of any bass I own (and I own 25, to include 6 Alembics) with the strings I use (DR High Beams, .40-.100), no small accomplishment. It plays like butter, and I absolutely love the coil tap switch on the MM pickup. Why Ernie Ball doesn't do that (ability to choose between coils, to include the back coil alone on a Stingray HH) is beyond me - it is so damn versatile. I'm not sure what is meant by dip switch settings, so I'll leave that one alone. The pic is the actual Ebay Pic as I don't have any of me with it, but it's mine!
It's such a good instrument that when I had to bring a bass with me to Korea, I chose the Lakie over other basses I own. Dan Lakin knows what he's doing. It's light, a tonal chameleon, and the quality and workmanship are world class (it's about the only bass I own, other than my Pedulla MVP that comes close to my Alembics in terms of quality and craftsmanship). For my money, a bassist could do a hell of a lot worse for the same money, that's for sure.

The dip switches are used to control the mid frequency which is being cut/boosted.
They are inside the electronics compartment with the gain trimmer pot, which can be used to increase/decrease preamp output.
The dip switches are two small, two-position switches, located near the bottom of the compartment:
1 - up + 2 - up = 250 hz
1 - up + 2 - dn = 500 hz (default)
1 - dn + 2 - up = 700 hz
1 - dn + 2 - dn = 850 hz

Man, you are *so* right about that. Plus, I don't like those little Gotoh-style tuners. All three of my basses use them and I just like the bigger ones that Fender/MM/Lakland/Sadowsky uses better. they feel meatier somehow and look a lot more dramatic.
Obviously, as I have three basses with the cheezy Gotohs on, it's not a make or break thing, but you know...
But yeah, I prefer the 4:1 headstock to that godawful 5:0 design. I think the only bass where I haven't fount the 5:0 style to be ugly is on the Hot Wire Double Bass. That's a sweet sound wrapped in a beautiful body, so I've come around a bit...
And I think we've hijacked the thread.
Uh... So yeah! I'll be a Laklander come summer (back on track).
