Well, my 44-01 came in today, ill give a more detailed review once I gig with it. I will be doing some recording in March and will likely give it a review in that arena too (read: sound clips).
Initial thoughts:
My initial review is quite glowing. After a quick bit o' tuning, I am pleased with the setup out of the box. The action is just a hair low, but not in a detrimental way. Intonation without a strobe seems pretty solid right out of the box, and the neck relief looks good. There is a slight bit of fret dressing needed (see post in setup forum), but I don't notice it while I am playing; probably just the perfectionist coming out in me.
Sound: My amp is at the shop, so my initial sound review is the ole' plug-into-the-computer-and-go setup. I will say however, that I am almost scared to hear what this baby will do on my rig Monday night.. it sounds very good compared side by side with my Tobias Growler 4. Actually it sounds better than I was expecting. My current plans are to upgrade the stock pre and pups with a ?/nordies setup.. going back and forth on which pre to use. Bridge fingerstyle tone seems to have exactly the growl I look for, couldnt be happier at this point. Slap tone is better than expected too; my growler is missing a little something that the lakland is providing on that side. Quite a pleasant surprise.
Misc: The pots (except for volume) all have a center detent, which is a small detail but one I notice. The boost/cut seems to be on a nice curve, not slow then drastic like I have heard some complain of.. not sure if there has been some change in that matter or not. The finish is amazing, it most certainly doesnt *look* like the "low end" of Lakland basses. With the exception of a quilted/exotic top I dont see how it could be better.
Overall, I am quite excited to be in the Lakland family, and if all of their products are this good or better, I just may never play another bass. My growler will soon be my fretless 4, with the 44-01 being moved into the primary slot.
