Usually the forums that charge nothing for an avatar pic or some other small stuff are a mess.
I pay my subscription because TB is a great resource for anything bass related and because things are quite cool here, mods work hard to keep it a nice forum to visit regularly. The avatar is a small, tiny bonus.

No. You dont upload an image every time you post...is just a link to an url that retrive a unique picture... speed or performance are not affected. The site is full of pics and run fast
If you promise that your avatar picture will be of the space elevator I'm sure someone will spot you the twenty bucks.
If you are a user and want to have an avatar you literally got to pay 1 MONTH of a FAST and PRIVATE server...
1 AVATAR = 1 MONTH of server cost
The fee is for selling privileges & a larger cloud space so to speak. The avatar image is just frosting. If you sell gear it's worth the fee considering ebay/paypal charges 13% per sale. 13% a $1,000 guitar is a lot to dish out. Sell several guitars even at $100 & you're still paying less on TB where bass gear is highly likely to sell, than on evilbay. If you're not concerned w commerce then forget about it. Or if your only concern is the avatar, forget about it. Try facebook.
Because James Cameron spent a lot of money (over $200 million) making the movie, and it's only fair he earn it back.

Because 20 bucks is the minimum cost in TB, and a month of a private and fast host cost that.
With 12 guys that want to upload an avatar...TB woud pay 1 year of fast servers...

You're paying more than you should because you're subsidizing the free use of all of the other talkbass users who enjoy the site without contributing financially to its upkeep. Including the ones complaining about the lack of free avatars.
