a good pick to use with bass?

I like the 1mm Clayton picks that are like a large rounded triangle. Nice and big...not too thick yet stand up to bass strings real nice. The big rounded triangle is easy to keep a grip on and I can hold different ways for diffrent "twang".

+1, although I use the .83mm most of the time, the 1mm less often. The Claytons are the only ones I feel comfotable with.

Dunlop should make some 2.5-3mm gators with a slight depression like the stubbies, that would be really nice.

When I use a pick it's the .88 Dunlops. A little give, but still solid.

Dunlop Tortex, .88 mm. Not too thin, not too thick, good grip and tone. Same as Bill, I purchased a gross many years ago and still have plenty left. Just try a bunch of different picks until you find what you like.

I guess I like 'em a little thinner than others here: Dunlop Tortex, yellow, .73 mm.

I use Dunlop tortex 1.00mm (blue) picks. They're good for flats and rounds, and I use them on mandolin as well. For me, the angle at which the pick intercepts the strings is the defining tone factor, not the material or shape. If the pick is parallel with the string when it strikes, the sound will be clear and full. When the pick hits at an angle, the resulting sound is too scratchy for me. But there are alot of great pick suggestions here, sure is cheaper experimenting with picks than with strings

Another tortex triangle orange .64 user here. Might try out the yellow sometime. I came across a couple bags of the orange years ago and have a billion left.

Another Dunlop Tortex user here... I have tried out a few brands, but the tortex I found to be the most comfortable. The matte sort of finish they have seems to do wonders for grip when my hand gets sweaty. I have no idea how that slight texture on the finish does it, but they maintain so much more control over regular celluloid and nylon picks when your hand gets sweaty.

I also read somewhere that Flea uses the green .88 tortex's when he plays songs with a pick (rarely)... so they can't be too bad.

There is also a good seller on ebay that will let you mix/match a whole heap of gauges for cheap. You should give them a shot.

I bought some strings recently and they threw in an assortment of generic picks. I messed with some medium-ish, maybe .73mm ones, and it is like a whole different world of tone. I always thought heavier was better, but they're really just different. So yeah bottom line, try a bunch and see what you like.

I've used the stiff Wedgie rubber for fast punk Buzzcock like power pop band I've been gigging with. They worked well. No sticking or grabbing although I can see that happening with the thinner ones and on guitar. Nice loud round tone. Got them from Elderly's.

+1 To the Brain Picks. I use the 1.00/gray ones and love them. I used to use the Dunlop Stubbies, but since I tried these, I've never looked back.

Dunlop purples. I use them exclusively. Very mellow sounding, almost...finger-like.

All I use is the dunlop tortex 1.14 purple ones because the sound is very mellow. The tortex plastic seems to be a lot softer and doesn't give a bright clicky sound.
