A Groovaholic Gig-Report: The "Triangle" Gig

You know "the gig triangle" right?

The sides of the triangle are:
1) Good music
2) Good people
3) Good pay

Last night was one of those rare, beautiful unicorns offering all three...
AND a production crew who provided FANTASTIC sound, an air-conditioned trailer behind the stage, and a MASSIVE fan side stage that kept the air moving on a VERY hot night.

Show was at Mt Prospect's 4th of July Festival, subbing with my friends in the band X-Side.

I was playing my Dingwall Z3 through my GK Legacy 800 and LDS 2x12. I brought my pedalboard but barely used it.
I started on wireless, but had a couple drop-outs during the first song, so I hardwired for the rest of the show.

Heat index was over 100, so the crowd started thin, but filled-in throughout our set.

It was a fun night playing - a reminder of why we do what we do.

Ha! I respect what they do and admire the fact that they have people talking and thinking about unusual music...but they aren't my thing.

Access to an A/C'd trailer behind the stage is aces!

A lot of 4th of July events in my state are being cancelled or postponed because of the dangerous heat.

So amazing you got to play an event AND get an A/C room!

I had a similar gig at a festival last weekend, actually. No A/C, but didn't need it anyway. Plus free beer.
Had a couple of subs in the band and still everything went off nicely.
The pay was poopie, but they did give us free camping at the fest, so had some great hangs with the boys till the wee hours on top of everything else.

Before yesterday, the last gig I played was the day after my birthday.
I had family in from out of town, and MORE family showed up at the venue - so it should have been a fun, celebratory show.

But one of the speakers in my (recently purchased used) cabinet had an intermittent failure - so my sound was cutting in & out all night.

Then my wireless died.

All told, rather than have fun and hang with my family, I had to stress about gear - and that robbed a lot of the fun from that night.

I'd tested the wireless' batteries before the gig - they were measuring above spec voltage.
PSA: I've since learned that lithium batteries go from "hero to zero" with very little warning

The speaker issue was a broken tinsel wire - I've repaired it since.

Anyhow, after the stress and disappointment of the prior gig, this one was even sweeter.
But that prior experience was also why I used my big, trusty cabinet and ixnayed the wireless as soon as it gave me the first hint of trouble.
