Most gold-plated hardware is plated in real 10k or 18k gold. While 24k gold is sometimes used, it is too soft to withstand polishing, and tends to wear off quickly.

Yes, there is actual gold on your Ibanez. Goldplating adds thin layer of real gold on hardware but it's just a few atoms thick so you won't get rich by scraping it off.

yeah, the guy with the burns seemed excited by the flakes... i thought he was a bit dim

just didn't think they'd use anything that expensive in anything other than really stupidly over the top basses, but i guess gold isn't THAT expensive, you can get gold leaf in craft stores

Gold is pricey but the amounts used in plating or flakes are so ridiculously small that it really isn't that expensive. With the material of one gold ring you could probably plate hundreds of tuners and bridges, the extra labor and time adds more cost than gold itself. And the leaf gold used on flakes is so incredibly thin it doesn't add expenses that much.
