a mystery for you: help identify this bass

It's weird, i am usually thoroughly obsessive about makes and models, so it's weird that i remember what this one looked like and not even the brand. I held it and i saw it, and had the owner describe it to me, he's more of a drummer though so not much useful detail. Didn't hear it. It's just kinda bugging me that i don't remember.... description is pretty vague...

i think the bass might have been a Burns of some sort...

allegedly worth about $4000 Australian (probably $2000 to $3000 new in USA) but may have been a bit of boasting and rounding up in that

over-all body shape kinda like a les paul guitar, but not exactly, just not a warlock or SG or flying V, pretty old fashioned.

Heavier than my light Ibanez, but not unusually heavy

i think 4 string, no more than 5

Red sunburst colour

probably 3 single-coil pick-ups

Allegedly 24-carat gold-plated hardware... but i'm sceptical

the thing i most remember was that the neck was kinda too glossy, kinda over-finished, not a nice smooth matt finish that's easy to glide along, reminded me of my cheap Epiphone guitar.

didn't get a good look at the head, but i think the tuning pegs were all in line on one side, i think...

This thread reminds me of something:

We need more details and pics to help.

Burnout. :p :D

Sounds like a custom made, IMO, from what OP said. Then again, OP isn't even sure about the details they did offer.

definitely wasn't custom made

seems odd that such a fancy piece of work would have such an unplayable neck? or is the neck on mine particularly good?

kinda looked all pretty but felt less good

yeah not expecting a make and model now... thought maybe one of the things i mentioned might be distinctive, but seems not.
