Sorry, not trying to bum you out, but it's pretty clear that those last 3 fret slots at the end of the board aren't right (especially that last one). It's not speculation... I'm looking at a picture of it. After analyzing it a bit more, they do seem pretty straight overall though.

Anyway, hope it works out for you. The shape is pretty cool.

Please, don't get me wrong here. I've looked at that pic and the others and with that pic I can see where you're coming from. The other two pics tell a different story. Pictures can be funny that way. I appreciate the input and you taking the time to look at it. I guess I'm just frustrated that so many folks seem to have it doomed. I feel like the right thing for me to do is to have the bass in hand before I give any real feedback.

+1. Looks like an optical illusion, all the frets with inlays look larger than the others.

At least, to me. A proper micrometer measurement would tell.

Even if frets 23 and 24 are slightly off, is that really going to be a problem? I doubt you'll be going up that high anyway.

The bass looks great and this one seems to be of a much different caliber than FL's. It's a very beautiful bass and I hope you'll keep posting pictures.

I play in the upper registar quite a bit, especially when tapping, but from what I can tell it looks fine. I appreciate all the compliments on the bass and will definitely post more pics.

You're right, it's probably best to wait until you have the finished bass in hand and give us your review. When I first found out about Tom and his basses I was excited by the prospect that another artisan was about to hit the scene with some really cool functional works of art at an insanely low price. I have a very open mind to various maker's interpretations of the bass as an instrument. I've been a devout fan of Steve's work and his philosophy for years and have taken flack from many opponents for my views and support of Steve's works. I was more than ready to do the same for Tom but as this thread progresses I'm having doubts.

As for your bass... I think it looks really nice and honestly, the bonding of the woods and the fact that there aren't any gaps (from what I can see in the picture below) shows that Tom does have some skill as a woodworker. Up to the point the picture below was taken I think your bass was pretty damned cool. But I think Tom may need to hone his skills as a luthier. I may be wrong... in fact I'd prefer it that I'm wrong and that you get a killer bass.

Someone seems to be in denial :rollno:

On Apr-05-10 at 05:04:18 PDT, seller added the following information:

I have resently had a buyer put a bad and false statement on my ebay responce. I had never heard from this buyer and also I found out that he was on bass talk trashing me with all false statements. He said I never contacted him and that the bass was junk and he would never wish it on anyone but yet he sold it to someone else. he started trash talking me even he ever recieved the bass. I always respond and always take care of any needs that there is on any of my basses. Keep this in mind and we can have a great relationship he even trash talk ebay with out the right to defend my self I have to build myself back up and ask all those that have enjoyed their basses to go on Bass talk and exspress thier opionions thank you Tom.

You have yet to point out where a single statement I made was false :confused: Not only did you provide me with an absolute POS bass, now you're lying about it on eBay. That doesn't look good to prospective customers here.............who despite all this, at least seem to be pulling for you regarding Steps bass.

Ya, I'm rather amazed by his actions. Here in front of a HUGE bass community he as the chance to prove himself despite what's happened........ and instead, shoots himself in the foot :scowl:

Tom, if you're still hanging around here... I will echo the guys who are encouraging you, but it looks like the basses need improvement. The woodworking seems good on the "Eye of the Tiger," but the little details make all the difference in the world in creating an instrument that can be played easily (pay attention to nut/string height & fret leveling), and can play in tune (fret & bridge placement). If the instrument can't do that, or even be set up to do that, it's just decoration. You're very close to making great basses, and you're getting a lot of good, free feedback here that you can use directly to increase the quality of your basses. No one here is out to get you.

No one here wants you to fail. Almost every single one of the people on here is trying to give you constructive criticism, to help you improve your craft.

As a group of bassists, I'm sure I can speak for most people here when I say that to have a bass made that is a good looking and well priced as yours but barely playable is almost torture.

I hope that you can drop the negative attitude that you've had towards FL and the rest of the guys here, and actually start listening and taking into account the things that are being said, and the advice you're being given. It's very good advice.

Good. God. I'd hate to be a grammar-nazi, but I could not take that response seriously if I were a potentially serious bidder. In fact, that would make it readily apparent that he is not the person to be doing business with.

Becoming a bit of a wood expert has been part of my education and work experience over the past couple years. I came here expecting to pick that apart. But wow....holy workmanship batman!!!! Step, your bass looks good so far. I'd have him stop, and ship it to you now. I feel for Tim, but dang dawg....that's pretty indefensible.

Never even got to the point of looking into moisture content issues, however his past feedback indicates that's been going on too.

I'd have to admit that I sometimes take things like that into account. A couple of misspellings or grammatical errors... no problem, honest mistakes or oversights. But when a post reads like my 7 year old grand daughter's homework assignment... I tend to get a little leery about the author's attention to detail in more than just his/her grammar and spelling. But hey, maybe I'm just a judgmental SOB.
