No, we are not. Untill the jackson 5 thing I had never heard of blackface, and I still cannot see how it could be considered "racist" to be honest.

To me, painting your face black to be in costume as someone who is infact black, seems like nothing but a sensible decision. I mean, the costume wouldn't make much sense if you had white skin, same as it wouldn't make much sense if they didn't put the wigs on.

I think people need to just chill out. I mean, was anyone genuinly offended? If anyone was, I am sure those in costume are very sorry and meant no offense.

I supopse this whole saga raises the question of how excusable is ignorance of things that could be highly offensive to other cultures and how "mainstream" the knowledge of that culture would need to be relative to your own.

Eg. No one could reasonably expect to knw that an act posted on the web in Australia woudl be offensive to a small fishing tribe in Norway, but if I saw an Australian kid on his way to a fancy dress party in blackface I would defintely tell them that it could be considered highly offensive. US history (as well as UK - its highly offensive in the UK as well) has enough penetration into Australian culture that people, on the whole, should be aware of why blackface is offensive. If you are not, then it doesn't make you racist, but IMO you should know better.

Been reading this with some interest. Plenty of well thought out, sensible adult comments. The odd bit of jackassery is to be expected.

Not understanding why this offensive doesn't make you a racist, as Mark says, but it does highlight cultural ignorance.

Gollywogs (a childs 'blackface' toy) and 'The Black and White Minstrel Show' were given the boot in the UK years ago for good reason.

MT...kudos for standing your ground.

I was posing that question to basstotheface, who is not an Aussie. He responded with "Yeah, I've seen 'It's Always Sunny,'" which was kinda.....well, he's a kid :D

The rugby player's skin isn't black; it's brown, which is a small slice of the matter. Besides that...good morning everyone!

Hey Tony all I can say is that white people who choose to perform in black face know exactly what they are doing. It's really a weak concept today if they think they are pushing any envelope.

Harry Connick Jr. was pissed. To the white people who choose to go the black face route it's old and played out.
