I can see both sides of this, in the end each person's needs are a little different. I can see the utility of a cheapo practice amp for use when traveling, to keep at a vacation home where you don't gig but want to play on the couch and get some sound, etc...
That said, modern technology has changed the landscape a bit. Personally, if I had such a need, my quilter BB800 is so small I'd consider just using that, and find the smallest 1x8 cab on the market and use that for travel. Of course I'd need to keep the volume low so as not to blow the speaker. That said, those little practice amps are so cheap it might be cheaper to just buy a rumble 15 or something that to get just a 1x8 cab.
