...function and requirements define the form; with the usage, the sales, the bass becomes familiar to the eye and then in turn it becomes a classic.

An Elite II is pure beauty (to me, to most) and it could be a good classic to be revised-revamped. Mvvho, obviously...

Now that I re-read the entire thread, I admit I really like the "proper P and 60s J" positioning. I assume you want a proper P sound out of it, will you go with 3VT controls or something more esoteric? Like a J volume, master volume (so you can solo just the P if necessary and dial in smaller amounts of the J), master tone?

nope. i never thought of building one of those. for me one p pickup is plenty, and the most i would ever add is a j bass pickup at the bridge like on this bass. basses with two p pickups just look 'cluttered' to me.

Ah, but you have to hear a P at the bridge to appreciate it. It's fatter and smoother than a J at the bridge. But they should be reversed.

That's a real nice looking bass you made. You actually use Fullerplast? I've heard it's nasty to work with. How's your experience with it?

i've had a few and still have one bass with dual P's (one's at the bridge) and i like it but i'm more of a single p pickup guy.

as far as the fullerplast, it's no worse or easier than any other 2 part catalyzed polys that i've used, other than it cures pretty fast so you have to clean your gun pretty much immediately after shooting it.

Just to add to the thread I have a Jazz master bass that john built for me And I really have to say its one of the best basses I've ever played low action piano tone !!! SICK It weighs around 7lbs and at first being so light it didn't feel right until i really got used to it. at this point I cant put it down.....

unfortunately i didn't take any pics while i was shaping it (but i wish that i did). sometimes i get so involved in the building process that i forget to get out my camera to stop and take pics of every step.

Nice work John, I didn't realise most J/P's had the P PU placed so far forwards. Hmmm, you've got me thinking now...that makes body space room for a 2 octave fretboard / neck....Hmmmmm.

With your jazz PU placement, did you use the early placement or to 70's further back placement?

I certainly know that feeling! I take a camera into my workshop every time. When I start and stop a bass making role, I take a few photos...and every time I make a cuppa, out comes the camera. If there's no photos, there's no diary and it didn't happen.

I'm currently doing a somewhat similar build - a J/P with same set-up and P-pu positioning as you did but with the bridge J in the slightly lower 70's position (8" center from neck butt) The body is a laminate of alder and maple w/much chambering inside. I'd forgotten about your beautiful build but it must have planted a seed in my mind! Nowhere near your level of seasoned craftsmanship, but so far so good all things considered.
