This is exactly what I am looking for at the moment. True P tone in a jazz surrounding plus the optional J-bridge sound. I think I am inspired to do something similar

A slightly different Jazz Bass build

I got the bass today. It's incredible. It is a P-bass for all practical purposes. It is a Jazz bass for all practical purposes. Sounds killer, plays like buttah, and looks like a million bucks. John is the man!
Congratulations!John does great work and I got a bass from him this summer. My other 3 jazzes have not been played or gigged since then. It is truly a case of "he does the vintage fender thing better than fender". His basses really nail the tone and I believe the necks are better than any boutique bass (John's necks really stand out in comparison to the boutique necks). The tones are really in line with a classic sound and the workmanship is better than my prev C.S basses. I think you will be happy for a long time.

If it's not a trade secret, how did you dull the PU covers? I was considering doing that to some covers I've got here as I don't care much for the glossiness - I'd prefer a satin-like finish.

The color doesn't do it for me, but the build itself is incredible. Might have to nab me a bass from you some day.
All I can say is that looks incredible!
My favorite touch was the dulled pickup covers... Do you mind sharing how you did that?

John: fwiw my compliments! This beautiful JP bass is one example (out of several possible) of what Fender could actually do just keeping a "new product" within the Fender tradition and giving something "fresh" to the customers at the same time, if they only would make a little... mental effort (no real costs involved actually!).
Did you ever think of building a passive PP (Elite II style)? Maybe with reversed pickups (a la Rocco Prestia)?

nope. i never thought of building one of those. for me one p pickup is plenty, and the most i would ever add is a j bass pickup at the bridge like on this bass. basses with two p pickups just look 'cluttered' to me.
yes, it might look a bit "too much", but since it became a classic, personally I would really love to find me a good old Elite II, before or after !!!
