Acoustic Electric Bass

Again mapleglo, fantastic build and your stick-to-it-iveness is more than admirable. She's a looker and I am hoping we get some sound clips when you get settled in with it.

Nice job all the way around - I enjoyed this thread immensely!

Thanks! I'll work on some sound clips this weekend.

What a cool project!

haven't checked this in a while but final product looks great!

Thanks!

I did a little more shaping on the arm rest.

More satisfied with the shape, I shot it with a coat of clear.

Another coat or so and it should be pretty close. I'm still waiting for the strap locks to come in. I'm not really sure how I'll attach those. Up by the neck, I should be able to screw it into that wood block under the neck. The lower strap lock may prove more elusive, especially since it seems I'm unable to reach that far into the body through the sound hole. And I'd like to get some kind of black tube to place in the sound hole, to cover the raw wood edges. But that's another obsession for another day :P

So I cut it down from this:

I just shot it with a coat a clear. It's probably a little too cold outside - I think it's around 55° today - but I'm impatient. Further shown by the fact that I finished it, then tested it, and then decided it needed to be a little thinner.

I have the strap locks installed, sort of, and the arm rest.

I couldn't get the nut and washer installed on the lower strap lock, but the hole is small enough that the machine screw kind of self threaded. It's tight now, but I fear it will loosen over time. Maybe I'll pour some resin over it at some point. I'll live with this for a while, and then decide if I want to smooth the back for refinishing.

In the mean time, I just bought this CD:

So now I can re-live my youth while playing my new bass.

Another fine bass Mapleglo, your grin playing it says it all.

Thanks!

I'm pretty impressed with the sound playing through the amp. I don't know what I did with that pickup, but it can really grind like a Jazz Bass, and thump like a Precision. I must have hit some kind of sweet spot with the positioning, because it's perfect to my ear. As soon as my fingers heal (I seem to have done a number on them over the past week), I'll post some sound clips.

Nice armrest, and nice CD.

I got GFR live in 1971 on Vinyl for christmas, cannot wait to play it when I get back from interstate.

Thanks!

Grand Funk was my first favorite band, after the Beatles. I learned to play bass listening to Mel. I saw them live at Madison Square Garden back in the mid 70's. What a show. That was after they got the keyboard player.
