Acoustic Electric Bass

Weird - 6500 winds and it's measuring about the same as the ones I wound for the Leaf at 8500 winds. Perhaps the calculator counter is missing some counts. In any event, I'm warming up the pot. I should have this in by this afternoon.

I'll have to do some research on them. I don't like having to use batteries, but if an outboard preamp will work, that is acceptable for me.

Yeah, just a simple clean micro amp can be pretty handy to have around, especially if playing around with peizos.
If you are happy with electronics you can actually make one fairly easily yourself - Invalid Link Removed

Doesn't it go up an amount after it has been waxed? Totally need to make one of your sewing machine winding rigs for my Rick'inspired project.

Thanks, that looks doable. There's a few piezo pickups on Amazon that are pretty cheap.

I don't remember the value changing after potting. The sewing machine winder works great. It can even still be used as a sewing machine :P

It did go up a little in DC resistance from just about 11k to 11.18k.

I definitely need to do something about the sharp corner transition from body to shell. I have some severe indentations on my forearm. I'm going to look into those John Pearse Armrest type things. I also ordered some strap locks. I'm hoping this bass doesn't neck dive too badly on a strap.

This slight change in resistance is probably due to the wire still being warm from potting (because copper resistance increases with temperature). That is, resistance of an unpotted pickup ought not change if it is later potted, assuming the wire is the same temperature when resistance is measured.

How loud is it when you play it unplugged?

When I took the bass to the bar, I was able to hear it while I was playing along with the jukebox, which was playing at what I'd call a moderate level. It's noticeably louder than any of my solid body basses, and if I strum it like a guitar, it keeps up with the volume of the acoustic Ovation. Playing single strings (like how one would play normally) is obviously lower in volume, but I'd guess it could keep up with one acoustic guitar. It would likely be buried by two acoustic guitars. It's perfect for playing along with my iTunes library in my bedroom with no amp, and playing the computer at a reasonable volume. I have a dB meter in my iPhone - I'll take some measurements at some point.

Yes! This is what caused the big blackout in the East in 2003! Overloaded transmission lines heated up, increased in resistance, failed, and the failure cascaded!
[nothing to do with basses]

We also encourage side line discussions that may have nothing to do with basses, but relate to the issues at hand. Like power :) Oddly enough, I was living back east in New Jersey during that 2003 black out. Power went out at work, so they sent everyone home. All the stop lights were out as I was driving home, and I was worried that my apartment would be really hot, and no A/C to cool it off when I got home. Turns out that my apartment was just over the line where the black out ended, so I had A/C, TV, and I was able to cook dinner when I got home.

So I started working on the arm rest today. I'm kind of moving in the dark, as I've never made anything like this before.

I traced the edge of the bass body on a piece of plywood, cut that out, and used it as a guide for the router.

I went about 1/2 way through the piece of maple, and then cut the outside with the jig saw.

Then lots of shaping and rounding over with all sorts of router bits, rasp files, drum sander, and sand paper.

Still a bit to do, and I may have to make it thinner, and shape the ends better, but getting there.

I would have worked on it longer, but lost the light, being one of the shortest days of the year. Things are looking up though - the days will only get longer from here on in.

Again mapleglo, fantastic build and your stick-to-it-iveness is more than admirable. She's a looker and I am hoping we get some sound clips when you get settled in with it.
