Ok so here's my first thread here on TB don't eat me haha but I would like to ask for some of your good opinions here because from what I have seen a huge amount of you know much more about basses then I do. So anyways, I was checking bassnw.com yesterday and saw that this had gone up for sale and wow today it's gone. It went crazy fast and I took particular interest in it. I read many reviews all of them said it's an amazing bass besides being quite heavy (I don't care about that). So now I'm very curious about this bass. I would probably jump on it but it doesn't feel like peavey is as mainstream or legit good as other brands like fender and ibanez that have a distinct reputation. Also it was only listed for $300 and this will be my second bass and I don't want to buy one that will make me want to upgrade as soon as I get it. So basically would anybody REALLY REALLY recommend this? I just found it online for only $250 used wow that sounds really cheap now. Or should I just save up more for like an ibanez 540 (which I also have my eye on). Thank you very much fellow TB'ers and sorry for the hugely long thread haha.

i had one of those. great bass. its very heavy, but has fantastic low end. its oak with a maple neck i think the build quality is above the ibanez. the bridge is a work of art. the tuners are high quality. good deal for $300 in my book. johnny a.

Anyway, after someone stole my '65 P-bass (in 1980), I got a T-40 and liked it much better. Although now, 30 years later, I walk all hunched over from it.
if you can handle the weight, T-40's are awesome basses. but they are HEAVY. probably 12lbs, or so. maybe more. no neckdive, though.
I had one and it is a great bass. At 63 the weight finally got to me

Had one. $250-300 is average. Great bass, extremely versatile, built like a sherman tank. Probably will retain value better than an Ibanez. Go for it.

Try to play one before you buy. My first real bass was a T-40, never really warmed to it, but didn't have a clue on how to use it to it's full potential. $250-$300 is about right price wise. They are well built and built like a tank so if you like it, go for it.
Mine weighed in at an astonishing 14 pounds. Aside from the weight it's a great bass. I'd say get it.
Yes thank you guys. Basically all of what you have said is what I've read in reviews so thanks. I'm gonna have to definitely make a tough decision but I do feel a lot better now about it.

Well, I jumped on at T-45 (single p/u version) the other day...just from hearing a crappy video on Youtube.
That doesn't make me a genius, just that I heard a tone I really like and well, it's weird and cool and cheap.

$250 for a late 70's (which that^^ bass is) Peavey T-40 is a nice price. If that bass has a case, then it's a excellent buy. If you don't like it, you can sell it without losing a dime.
T-40's are legitimately great basses. Easily the best value in vintage basses, period. They're well made and sound great. They can be heavy, but not all of them are. I have one T-40 that weighs in at 10lbs. (which I consider average weight).
You should buy that bass.
Total myth. Peavey basses are every bit as good, and are often better, than anything Fender or Ibanez has made. Peavey has the undeserved reputation of making cheap junk because their corporate policy has always been to produce a great product at an affordable price point.
I have 5 Fenders, 5 Ibanez, and 17 Peavey basses (3 of them are T-40's). As a buyer, it delights me that Peavey is so underappreciated that I can afford to own that many awesome basses.
I'm relatively new, and I got my T-40 earlier this year. It was my fifth bass, and the first I've been 100% happy with. The weight doesn't bother me, in many ways I Then again, I'm young. I love the fact that if I'm not feeling the tone I had the day before, small twist of a knob and a flick of a switch and I feel like I have a new bass. More than anything, a T-40 is a tank of the bass world(my experience, at least). I can't recommend it highly enough.
the Peavey T40 which is a pretty unique bass. well made vintage american bass guitar for $250 is a pretty good deal if you think about what a fender bass from that year would cost you will get the picture. those old peaveys are usually pretty cheap personally i like the way they sound and look, but the neck is very thick which i do not like but some people do. they are very very heavy however, but nothing at all like an ibanez which usually have pretty thin necks. if you are comfortable with a fender precision or warwick neck the peavey t40 should not be uncomfortable for you. now dont you think that would have been easier to read if i had used some line breaks somewhere like everyone else did?

I like them, but I cannot play one an entire set. Just too heavy for me.
Can sound good with light or heavy strings.
