Acting like a baller, tipping singles

LOL!! Yeah, right! It's not free money! I'm working my ass off, playing 4 hours, killing my feet and my back, driving an hour both ways, lugging my heavy equipment around, and dealing with drunks all night. And someone is usually so drunk that they try to provoke a fight. And we are playing specific requests. After I worked a whole day at my "other" job too. Thanks for the generous offer but I think I'll decline. :D

And, lest we forget, it's also taxable income!
That sounds awful!! I'd quit if I were you. Then, Voila!! No more complaints :)

I ask people this (as a group, not to pick on any one person):

How much do you tip your servers in the course of an evening? Did the performers provide you with at least as much entertainment value as your servers did? Then why not tip them the same? Whatever you've tipped your servers tonight for their service, why not tip the entertainers the same for theirs?

Don't take anything away from the servers - they've earned their tips! Have your entertainers not also earned theirs?

We playfully joke that cover band dive bars (like my Wed night) should be managed like nudie bars. There should be big bouncers walking around, telling the people who've been watching the band for hours, demanding requests the whole time, that they are expected to leave tips for the services they are enjoying. And we're not above wearing those tip bands on our legs, so when people come up to the stage we just shake our tipping leg until they acknowledge the hint.

Joking of course, but imagine such a world.....

I'd say if you're not negotiating enough pay to make it worth your while, it's on you. Complaining about what someone chooses to give you seems kinda wrong. I mean are you complaining about those that give nothing?

It's a separate conversation, about those who are very demanding on the band and expect it all for free.

I'm not complaining about people leaving tips. And I'm not complaining about people leaving singles.

I just think it's funny when people act as if they are rolling in the duckets, leaving a $1 in the tip jar. I tip bartenders $1 per round, I don't make a big deal of it, and I certainly don't act like I'm doing them a big favor. It's expected.

Unfortunately MANY people are cheap, have no idea or both. Occupational hazard lol! I just love getting out and playing :)

I wasn't commenting on people complaining about people leaving tips or singles; I was just commenting on people acting like they should receive duckets and be given them in a appropriate manner, so as not to convey an attitude of pride on the part of the donor...

~Seriously man, just poking fun, no need to be come exasperated to the point of a sigh. ~

i think you guys are missing the point: it's not the money, it's the attitude that is bothersome.

i don't think the OP cares as much about the amount of money the way you are describing. i think the issue is with the "air" about these people. nothing bugs me more than big talk and little to no action. don't paint yourself one way to everyone and not actually act that way. i think that's the complaint.

ok....back to normal TB where everyone misses the point so they can troll someone who is venting with people they thought shared the same problems.

Not even bothersome....just funny to watch. Hence the humor thread, friendly reminder to all :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

I played the whole of Saturday night and didn't get a single tip, but I didn't tip any of the bar staff either...

I won't get any tips this coming Saturday, and I won't be tipping the bar staff either...I am SO glad that I live in the UK.

Just curious, from a cover band perspective, do bands make more money in the UK from the venue, due to the whole no-tipping culture? For instance, if I was in the UK could I ride the band for requests all night and be expected to give nothing in return, but pay more for my drinks and a bigger cover charge so in the end the bar and the band get the same relative payout?

All I know is, I work as a contractor during the day, and frequent kitchens, where it very common to hear the wait staff complaining about international guests. Some of these people spend $200 at a table and leave little, and often no, tip at all, expecting to be waited on hand and foot.

Just curious!

Wow. I never even considered looking down my nose at someone walking up and kicking in a buck or 2. I always figured my pay was what the negotiated fee was, and tips were frosting on the cake. Never once did I complain about putting an extra 10-50 dollar bills in my pocket at the end of the night! I never picked up on anyone copping an attitude while tipping either. Guess I'm just oblivious? Life is short.....don't sweat the little poopie!
