Acting like a baller, tipping singles

Bro, if you're playing the bar on the top of Fleetwood's then I've already blown my wad flying over there and staying in Ka'anapali. You're lucky I don't just buy another overpriced mai tai and keep my tip to myself.

I'll be there in August. I'll look for you. Where you usually at?

Hit me up and I'll know where I'll be when you're here.

Not currently playing Fleetwoods...there are a few other bands on the rooftop in a rotation, I played there a few times to great reception and we can't get back in.

They just opened up a club downstairs too, but so far only Mick and his celebrity friends play gigs there, rest of the time it's super lame dj stuff

LOL!! Yeah, right! It's not free money! I'm working my ass off, playing 4 hours, killing my feet and my back, driving an hour both ways, lugging my heavy equipment around, and dealing with drunks all night. And someone is usually so drunk that they try to provoke a fight. And we are playing specific requests. After I worked a whole day at my "other" job too. Thanks for the generous offer but I think I'll decline. :D

And, lest we forget, it's also taxable income!

So your playing a four hour gig solely for tips? I understand that venues are dealing out dirt left/right but that seems crazy...

Otherwise- I'd go with the consensus opinion that many people are cheap, unappreciative of artists, and make grandiose tiny tips into grandiose gestures

Soooo, somebody who does not have to is handing you money, and the problem is?

Sounds like winning the lottery and complaining because your payout was in fifties instead of hundreds. ;)
Amen...
If you feel like somebody owes You in this business...Your in the wrong business.

A blast from the past, and my feelings about people who feel entitled to free live music. I'm no mercenary who only plays for money, but if i make an effort to haul crap out to entertain, at least appreciate the effort enough to throw us the price of a beer.

I think you missed the point....unless you see a reason I should send that guy my tips? ;)

After otherwise, I'm pretty much right there with you!

Some nights my tips are good. Some nights, not so great. Don't care. I used to refuse to put up a tip bucket. People complained. Really! So now I do. I put it off to the side so they don't feel obligated. I expect nothing, so anything is good as far as I am concerned.

And the guy swaggering up and dropping in a dollar is my hero! Others see him put on a show and there is not doubt where the tip bucket is....thanks to "that guy". Be thankful. He was part of the show as far as I am concerned. He let others know where to put the dollar. Or two.

I ask people this (as a group, not to pick on any one person):

How much do you tip your servers in the course of an evening? Did the performers provide you with at least as much entertainment value as your servers did? Then why not tip them the same? Whatever you've tipped your servers tonight for their service, why not tip the entertainers the same for theirs?

Don't take anything away from the servers - they've earned their tips! Have your entertainers not also earned theirs?
Well I tip my server %25 of my bill after tax. So by that logic it all depends on how much you paid to see the band. But I'm just splitting hairs. I understand your point.

Threw my pocket change into the tip box of the old dude playing sax at the O'Hare transit station yesterday. (I think the only song he plays is "Misty"). Neither he nor I know how much it was, but I got a grateful "God bless you, brother" and he played on. Expect nothing and be grateful for what you do get.

Tip jars?
I've never once asked people to tip at gigs, My pay is negotiated before hand
If someone tips...regardless of how much; I say Thank you!
Different places have different ways of doing things though...obviously.
But; humility always looks best.

99¢ a tune iLive Player. Yup, that's what you are.

I've never played for tips, so I can't relate. People send up lots of drinks though... too many in some cases, so we just give them away after the set.
