The 30" scale StingRay will be passive.Yeah, but they are running in the $2K range. OP is staying away from that range. But I do think they are nice!

I have an SWB-1. Mine is a passive model since I'm not big on active basses in general. But the build quality and playability is superb.
I was feeling a little bored. So I put a set of piccolo bass strings on my SWB just to have something different to play. And that's opened up a whole new realm of musical inspiration for me.
