Adding ports for ventilation.

I ported a shallow,sealed 4x12 loaded with Carvins PS12s a few years back. I have had no issues what so ever and have pushed my cab pretty hard with some pretty low tunning.
How did you calculate the port size? Did you have the Vas, Qts, Fs, etc. info in advance to know what frequency to used for the cab tuning?
 
It's been said before, but the air in a sealed cab performs the important function of acting like a spring against the speakers, preventing over excursion. A ported cab is possible, but probably not ideal unless you know what you're doing.
