mark beem said:Why not? That pretty much was my assessment of the Warriors I played at last NAMM. I (or anyone else for that matter) only need as much justification I deem necessary for myself when making decisions. The Warriors that I played were all beautiful instruments without a doubt. Construction, fit and finish were all top notch, but the sound wasn't there. Am I wrong in feeling that way? Is my critique unjustified?
I think that the problem is people feel the critics are making blanket statements when these comments are made and get offended because they feel their "chosen builder" has been maligned in some way. No, I've not played every Warrior out there, but I can only make my decisions based on what I know. Don't take it personally if it doesn't follow your feelings.
Then perhaps if you'd asked him that directly;Ninestring said:Your critique is not unjustified. I was asking DZ about a specific Adler bass. There is a good chance it was a knock off, and not a genuine Adler.
As we all know, many things go into making up an instrument's overall tone. I couldn't pinpoint one cause why the Warriors I played didn't sound great to me. They had Bartolini pups and I'm assuming Bart electronics as well. I've played basses in the past with Bart setups that sounded great. The ones I played were made of mahogany and ash (multiple basses). Again, I've played basses made with both those woods in the past which sounded great. Maybe it was a combination, maybe it was neither of these two features. All I can say is that whatever it was didn't appeal to me personally. Again I ask, does the fact that I can't pinpoint one cause/reason negate my critique of the Warrior basses I played?Ninestring said:You never need to justify your feelings about a bass, but if I asked you why you did or didn't like a particular instrument, would you "Talk Bass" ? If DZ replied, for instance "it's the pick ups, they fall off at around 1k", it would have been helpful. At this point ,I have to discount his opinion.
As I said, from the tone of your post it seemed (to me) you were "pissed" that he thought the bass lacked sonically.Ninestring said:I am not offended if DZ malignes Adler. I think it is off topic for you to assume my emotional state or reactions to a post. Why waste everybody's time telling me not to takes it personally if it doesn't follow my feelings.

"DZ, are you sure this was a genuine Adler bass or could it have been a knock-off?"
..it might not have seemed like you were coming down on the guy for saying he didn't care for the bass' sound.

My sincere apologies then for misinterpreting your posts. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.Ninestring said:I would have asked DZ that question, but he posted "drop it". I respect that. The truth is he never has played an Adler bass. No harm done. I recently ordered several Adler basses. I don't have an opinion about another bass player who doesn't care for them. Adler basses are not for everyone. I don't think less of you for not sharing my views.
I appreciate your creative interpretation of my post's "tone". I was not "pissed" that he thought the bass "lacked sonically'. I wanted to know in what way it did. I never devalued his opinion.
I guess I am more interested in the subject matter here rather creating and participating in the side shows. We have spent more time trying to discredit my line of questioning rather than on the topic.
Also, it would probably have to be a pretty blatant knockoff, right down to the name on the headstock, because I would bet most bassists in the world wouldn't know an Adler bass by sight. I even doubt many would know them by name even if they had a hang-tag on them.Daniel LeClaire said:With all due respect, why would anyone make a fake Adler? I mean, if you're going to make a fake you would probably pick a more well known builder than Adler, say Fodera for instance. It just makes no sense.![]()

I think its more likely that he thought it was a maple bass but wasn't. Like he Said, he doesnt remember the exact wood "recipe," and the bass didnt do it for him. I probably would forget about a bass that didnt do much for me too.
Mark Latimour said:I guess its also possible that there is another guy called "Adler" out there building a limited number of basses and selling them locally!
Las Olas said:Interesting thread. I sincerely hope to play an Adler one day. Being in the UK, I'm guessing I'll have a long wait.
Mr Adler, I greatly enjoyed the extensive coverage of your magnificent 11 string bass. Whilst I'm sure you don't want to be known for just one bass, it was the one that alerted me to your work, and all the reviews I've read lead me to say keep up the good work!
