Double Bass Advice on loud strings for unamplified bluegrass

Gamuts were definitely airier and more complex than Chordas Carlos on my bass...those Pirastros just ooze raw horsepower, but aren't too refined.

Never tried the Eurosonics so I'm curious to hear how they pair up. Popcorn is popping!

Another possibility: Pirastro is about to release a signature set designed in collaboration with the French roots player Nic Dubouchet. He tells me they're basically raw gut tops with chromesteel flatwound bottoms that have synthetic cores similar to EPs.

You can hear his on YouTube. How similar his recent hotrodded Engelhardt and your old carved German will respond to that set is an open question.

IDK Clarky, as of this writing, the link you posted listed them at 429 euros. Maybe it's the current exchange rate, but that seems downright reasonable to me!

That said, I have a full set of Gamut Pistoys on my Shen...so what do I know about "reasonable"?

Sheriff- your Gamut to Chorda comparison, was that Lyon or Pistoy for the plain strings?

And speaking of Gamut- at one point they were talking about introducing flatwound strings- does anyone know what ever happened with that?

I'm gonna go ahead and venture a guess that 429 Euros is MSRP, not street price.

Update post gig: Well Gamut/Eurosonic combo plenty loud ... but I could hardly hear my intonation (the D string especially bad) and it just sounded a bit boomy/woofy for me. Got home at 11pm and immediately switched back to Spiro Mittels/reds. Yes I know ....

I'm a little at a loss for why Pirastro gut is so expensive. I was back in nyc this week and visited Gage, and decided to treat myself to a gut G....was thinking Chorda but the Gamut Lyon was almost 30 bucks cheaper. At that price point for the slap bass set, I'm unsure who the target market is.

Following on from the above few posts, I just spotted that Bassico in Germany has lowered the Pirastro slap set price to a more reasonable Euro 290 (and is listing individual strings as well) Invalid Link Removed
