Hi folks,
digirira, what didn't you like about it for upright? I am curious if anyone is using this amp for BG & upright?
I thought I might jump into the discussion, I know it's a little late, and we're here in the BG forum, but yes I do use the AER amp one for double bass.
Well, I just plain love it. Here's why:
*It doesn't have a tweeter, but the frequency range is complete (unlike other amps, where the 10'' speaker alone doesn't give you enough higher frequencies). The absence of a tweeter, in my opinion, avoids any of the usual accentuation of finger sounds and especially bowing noises.
*It is perfect for my double bass, which when played without an amp lacks some definition in the middle range. The bass sounds sweet acoustically but is not very loud and doesn't cut through well in a band. The amp one does accentuate the mid-range, but unlike other small e-bass amps, also has very juicy low mids and basses. So the sound for double bass is always balanced and warm and just cuts through in every situation. This was the sound I had been looking for!
I compared it with lots of other amps, and at the end I had to choose between the markacoustic and the aer. The markacoustic sounds even more acoustic than the aer, but it just doesn't help my upright to be heard in a band. So I think it depends very much on your instrument and on how you want to use it.
*On the other hand, most features on the amp are clearly ready-made for electric basses. The "colour" switch is great for chord playing on the electric, but doesn't make sense with an acoustic. The "bass-boost" grips the very low end (about 50 Hz) which you won't need on the double bass. The same is valid for the "tone-balance" section...
*...but just check out the "regular" equalizer section: I find I can adjust the sound for about any situation (room etc) and instrument (regular upright, Eminence EUB) just the way I need it. The greatest thing about it is the semi-parametric mid-range with switchable bandwidth. With a narrow bandwidth, you can eliminate feedback most effectively, very much like with a notch filter. With the wide bandwidth, you can cut the nasty frequencies about 600-700 Hz that the Eminence EUB kind of over-accentuates.
All this said, with such an overwhelming collection of features, there's something for everyone. And the price, well, look at the other comparable amps: AER Acoustic Amps, Markbass, Glockenklang, Tecamp, Genz-Benz etc. -- for such a high quality amp, it's not a lot of money.
Hope that info is interesting for some of you upright players. I'm curious to hear other opinions!
