After reading TB for almost a year

I wanted to make my bass play better so I roasted a baseball bat in butter. I wanted it to sound better, so I put on a tortoise shell pick guard. I sold everything but my P bass and bought 4 more P basses so I could have one each with different kinds of flats and different tone woods on the fret boards. I routed chambers into all of them because some of them weighed more than 8 lbs 6 oz. Tone wood makes all the difference, but you don't want too much of it! I spent thousands on boutique cabinets and high-end heads and use DI live with IEMs. I obsess over minor tonal differences in pickups but still can't play two-octave arpeggios in 12 keys without losing my place half way through the circle of fifths.

And after all that I still can't figure out the best bass for metal. Can anybody help?

In all seriousness, I love the community at TB. I've received lots of high-quality advice as I re-embark on my bass journey after a long period of relative inactivity. When I first started playing in the 80s, the only sources of info were the grapevine and the guys at the music stores, who were always viewed with suspicion. But there sure are some common tropes that keep getting dragged out.

Very funny, and close enough to truth to be perfect. Well written. I have a buddy who's even more neurotic with Saxes, mouthpieces and reeds. When I asked the best tenor sax player I've heard in years about the horn he was playing he said "it pissed him off less than his Selmer MKVI". We all seem to have happier instrument relations than that.

All mid 70s USA, because I hear they have the densest tone wood. That's really important with flats, I gather.

But are you using a compressor at the start or the end of your signal chain with your P bass flat wound MIM bass? And is it an optical comp or maybe a multi band one or (powers forbid!) are you not using one at all?

I'm using the compressor after the amp stage and before the speaker. Am I doing the ohms right here, or should I add a 4 ohm 2x15 to increase the wattage?

What type of peanut butter? Its important to use the right one. I think crunchy gives a better tone. Others with more experience might have other ideas.
