Agathis is a 'poor man's mahogany', related to the pine family of woods and grown in many asian countries. It's cheap, easy to use and gives consistent and stable results, so it is often used in less expensive instruments. The best way to describe the tone is similar to mahogany, but is more bland sounding with a less complex sound.
I am assuming that agathis is even worse than basswood.

lol! well that's the acid test...how it sounds in bc rich bassesI'd vote no if poll ws still open, so long as its qaulity agathis rather then cheapo version. It tends to be darker then most, near to mahogany but with more edge to the treble. Its not going to be as smooth in the top end as mahogany. That can be good or meh depending on the pups used. Id avoid pups that tend to accent the upper treble much since agathis can lend some harshness to that range. Not all agathis is equal. If inferior its gonna be like basswood in that it has less detail in the sound then mahogany, alder, and ash. If superior peice will have the detail of mahogany but be a bit more trebly then mahogany. Impressions are mainly based on comparing BC Rich imports useing mahogany to ones with agathis body instead.
The properties of a given type of tonewood will vary a lot from one tree to the next.

I stated before in your other post, that it really is a matter of taste. Some people like northern Ash and some people hate it. Same thing with basswood or maple or whatever. Agathis is a medium weight wood I believe and has a slightly edgy tone with decent punch. SOmeone correct me if I'm wrong.
