Age Discrimination

the rule is only angus young is allowed end of story bye
That's right.

Could somebody explain the hate for shorts on stage? Hell, Anthrax made that their trademark. To quote "I'm The Man '91":

"Five guys in shorts, who gives a poopie
We do what we like, we don't care where we fit"
A little self-conscious about their anti-fashion, eh?

Of course, your mileage may vary. I imagine the dress code requirements are a bit different for cover bands vs original bands.

If you have lots of hair, or a shaved head, tats, a great body, a banging light show, a million-dollar PA, and some smash hits, go for it.

If you have a gut, white legs, white sneakers, varicose veins, and you play other people's music, no way.

Well, it's finally happened... Age discrimination.
After playing a particular local venue several times over the past few years with great turnout, a packed house of diners, drinkers, and dancers, then getting no replies & no return communication to our attempts to book more dates, we learned this:

A friend who plays in another band that has played this venue regularly and has also been getting the cold shoulder was told by his booking agent that the venue's manager said he doesn't want any more 'grey haired old guy bands' on his stage. He wants 'young bands who can draw a younger, cooler clientele and not players who look like their fathers'.

So I guess it's all about what you look like at this place.

This venue is dead to me now.

well image DOES add or detract at some venues, some shows. If a bar wants to draw a younger crowd, they will want younger musicians. They get to make that call - just like saying they'd rather have a rock band than a country band.

I'm not sure this constitutes "discrimination" - as much as it is a business decision that may or may not work out for the bar. That's life. Suck it up, buttercup. Yeah, a lot of places don't want "grey beard bands". and others do. the realities of the marketplace. deal with it.

but yes, you want to be more cool. Ditch the beards. Ditch the shorts. Stop just standing there. Adjust your set lists to what people might want to hear instead of the same ole same ole. Give them a show.

in my city, one of the most popular cover bands ? All the members but one are over 60. but they play great. they still try and look the part and they are excellent musicians. and people love them.

sell 150+ million albums, including the biggest selling hard rock album of all time, then you can comment on Angus' trademark look...just sayin

that being said, long baggy shorts on old, fat guys (actually any old guy) on stage is awful. Cheesy. Not a great look. Dress the part - it helps.

I'll comment on whatever I damn well please, thank you very much.

Ah, I see.

it wasn't about YOU personally. It was the point that anyone here comparing themselves to Angus Young and using it as some justification for how one dresses on stage is absurd on the face of it, given his level of success.

for the rest of us, yeah, stage look often does matter. at any age

I can recognize someone's musical greatness while at the same time also disagreeing with their attire choices. I think parachute pants look dumb, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying MC Hammer's songs.

And yeah... I'm not Angus Young. If I wore schoolboy shorts on stage, people would just think "what a weirdo."

Shorts are quite acceptable for some gigs, totally out for others, and a source of constant disagreement on TB generally (see also hats and music stands).

I never ceased to be amazed at the poopie musicians argue about.
*I just realized that either talkbass autocorrects swear words or I have a setting that autocorrects them somewhere. This hat wearing, shorts wearing bassist wouldn't actually use the word "poopie" intentionally.*

And Angus takes his 7 figures a night and thinks, "Good job I've got, this weirdo thing."
"Angus" and some Luzer also in cargo shorts last Friday night at the infamous Cove in Worcester MA - no other band wore shorts . At least the monitors covered it up somewhat and you can't see if anyone was wearing socks with their sandals or not ;) - the singer was lookin' good :D.
Small world - guitarist is one of TonyP- 's surf buddies ...
