Aguilar Tone Hammer 350

Yes, I have been following your posts on that. These days, we live in Istanbul, and I already have two AE112s, one HT112, and an IP112 here. But I left my AE212 in Brooklyn, so most probably, at this moment, I will not get any of the new cabs. But it is definitely watering my mouth!

Sorry, folks, for stealing the topic away. So, back to TH350! :)

Cheers,

A.

You are more loaded for bear with Berg's than I am.

We are planning a return trip to Istanbul sometime (we have a good friend who is from there). I'll let you know if that happens. What an amazingly wonderful place!

Had the first gig with the TH350 tonight. Overall, I'm extremely pleased. I did a restaurant trio gig that runs the gamut from standards to modern funk. A pretty wide array of playing styles.

Paired with one GS112 the TH350 laid it down nice and thick all night. This is a fairly low volume gig and I had plenty of headroom to work with. I'm still figuring out how the Drive interacts with the Gain knob. I had them both around noon. Just enough to get a little warmth in the lows. I need to work with it a little more.

I couldn't be happier with the amp. I had to walk about a block and a half to the restaurant. It was awesome having an easy one trip load-in from the car. I'd be interested in hearing impressions of people who have compared the GS112 to the SL112.

Oh, Thanks Kjung! I've been touring & recording with them for over 15 years now...

Im playing Brooklyn in a few days & am planning on visiting the fine folks over at Aguilar! Great products, great after sale service & making units one-at-a-time in NYC!!! Plus, their stuff isn't insanely priced to boot. I'm not an endorser or anything, but I can't say enough good things about their amps, pedals and pre's. Hoping to try out some cabs while I'm there- I'm in the market for a microlight cab for around-Nashville gigs and rehearsals. (Lets see if Aguilar can talk me out of the Baer 1x12's!) ;-)

Do you folks have any thoughts on the AG112 vs the SL112 ? Dont need Spinal Tap volume, but want full low end that can take what my Octamizer pedal throws at it!

From a lot of the Sixpence videos looks like you play a SVT with them? Does the TH350 not cut it for their sound?

Hmm... Well, I've never actually owned an SVT! So those were definitely rental amps in whatever video footage you saw! (SVT's sound great and are the most readily available rental head.)

I just finished up Sixpence winter tour. I bought my TH350 right before the tour with the idea of only using it as a "backup" amp in case whatever tube amp I brought out broke down. My main touring amps are all tube - a 300w Fender 300Pro or a Mesa Buster 200 (200 watter). At various shows I decided to try the "backup" TH350 just to see what it could do - It killed! More than enough volume and guts to pull off a Sixpence show! (That's a louder than necessary stage with an aggressive drummer w/ no shield and the guitarist cranking stereo AC15's.)

The Aguilar TH350 more than surpassed my expectations & I'm totally comfortable using it as a 'Primary' amplfier! Even at 8ohms through a single 15", it has no problem filling the stage.

In related news, my facebook post from the weekend:
"I've used literally hundreds of rental bass amps over the last 20 years... In all of that time I've probably only had a dozen amps or cabs fail during a show. Not a bad record, but of those 12 or so failures-10 have been SWR's. Grrrrrr.....

Every once in a while, the promotor ignores or 'fudges' on the tech rider- I get it, **** happens. Still, the show gets compromised & it pisses me off that I don't have a tool to do my job! I still 'get the job done' and do my best, but I really wish every SWR amp and cab was used to build a coral reef somewhere. It's a better use of the product. SWR apparently stands for "Sucks When Rented"!

In the future I will never do a fly date without my superlight Aggie TH350 head!

...end rant...
"

Were you playing upright or electric on this gig? I used to have a pair of GS112's, but they were so scooped sounding I could never get them to sound right with the upright. The SL and DB cabinets from Aguilar are much more balanced.

This gig is all electric.

I don't think I've ever plugged the upright into one of the GS112's. I usually use an Acoustic Image rig with the upright. I hadn't really thought about using the 350 on upright but I might have to give it a go.

Finally got to play on my new TH350 through a Bag End S15-D!
:hyper:
Unfortunately, in an apartment where I can't turn it up to see what it can do...
Preliminary observations:

-When I first switched to flatwounds last year, I really loved the "tactile" sound. You could really hear the articulation of the finger making contact with the string, but without it being bright and aggressive like a roundwound. This new TH350/S15-D combo really makes that tactile sound even more apparent, which I like a lot.

-Just noticed that the frequency center of the bass EQ knob is 40hz, which seems to really help fill in the low-end of the S15-D (which falls off at 50hz, according to BE's website).

Use a TH500/TH350 with a similar cab & it's very similar volume...imo etc:cool:

-This is good to hear. My GF, who is currently teaching some audio technology classes, mentioned that she has been reading articles that suggest having an amp that has up to 50% more power than what your speakers can take. With a 200w RMS rating on the S15-D's, and 175w @ 8 ohms on the TH350, it had me wondering again if I should have gone for the TH500.
However, after reading some more about how the power rating on the TH350 is pretty conservative and that it has a bunch of protection circuitry built-in, in addition to the fact that the TH500 is barely if at all louder, I think the TH350 is probably the right fit. Won't know for sure until this weekend's gig!

After reading all your post about this amp - I'm in! (you're a traveling professional with a pretty decent vitae, so I trust your word) I couldn't pass up the 75 off at GC today.

I'm an all tube man as well and this will be another attempt of trying to enjoy the micro amp scene. Unfortunately, they're back ordered so it may be a few week before I see it.

BTW: I think he was referring to some early footage on YT with Sixpence on a late night show - you're probably paying their equipment which is pretty much always a SVT and Frig.

The TH350 came in. Its super small! This head really kicks as well. I honestly don't see needing more headroom than this(for the gigs I play). I have the drive set at about 9:00 and the EQ relatively flat and its giving me exactly what I want tonally with my Fender Precision. This weekend I have a couple lower volume jazz gigs, so I won't get to push the amp until next week. Pretty impressive unit though.

Here is a pic comparing the 350 to the 500 I posted on the TH500 site. The picture is taken from a bit of a downward angle, so tricks the eye a bit to see the TH350 as a bit taller... it is not.

Even the TH500 is really small... these heads are sitting on an offset-vertical 210 for context.

Totally digging them both, and again, am impressed that the TH350 is every bit the quality and has every bit of the tonality of the TH500, and only has a couple less features (no effects loop and one speakon out), and of course, less headroom.

I chose the 350 based mostly on the extra few inches of space savings (I was going to fit it in my accessory road case which was just big enough...). As it worked out, I just use the Aggie gig bag for it. Still, I'm more than satisfied wit the usable volume!

I suppose if the Tone Hammer was my only amp - I would go with the 500. For the around town, fly date and rehearsal machine I need, the 350 is definitely the ticket! I'm also gearing up for a double bass tour- the TH350 paired with an SL 112 are the rig! Pics and a report will follow!

+1 Totally legit 'pro' head, and the only thing you lose is a bit of open, wide, deep low end when really pushed. And, for some, that actually isn't a bad thing. The absolute volume is not that different.

The size of the TH350 is pretty amazing, and again, all the quality and tone. I couldn't help buying one!

That should be a GREAT DB rig. The drive control with the gain set low should do a great job 'wooding up' the DB and controlling low end boom, and then you still have the semi-parametric for the always present DB feedback/wolf note control in a live setting.

Cool! Are you going out with Sixpence on DB, or another band. Let me know if you will be anywhere near Milwaukee/Chicago!
