Good question,

I was wandering the same thing.
I have the Tonehammer. I think the clean sound doesn't fatten the sound when you are playing in the 'clean mode'. If you set the EQ knobs in the middle position the sound it pretty much as your original sound (although there is some Aguilar edge on it, but I am not completely sure). You can make it more 'fat' with the EQ knobs. But if you use the AGS it will fatten the sound, you can go from a more clean fattened sound to a heavily overdriven sound if you turn up the gain.

I am also curious what other people experience are in this.

What I noticed is that there is a volume boost when you engage the AGS. So it is not so usuable if you want to switch between the clean channel and the AGS channel in one song.
Also I noticed quit some hiss/noise when you turn up the treble more than 12 o'clock.

hi,

i recently got my tone-hammer (probably one of the first here in germany). i like it so much i immediatly sold my ebs micro-bass II.

if you put the eq flat there is no noticeable difference in the sound (other with the ebs, the sound got worse). it does not colour the sound of the bass to my ears, which i like very much.

i will use it to change between a passive and active basses in a live situation as a preamp for the passive bass and to level up the output.

i think the amount of hiss the high-eq adds to the sound is acceptable, way less than other pedals (and again less than the micro-bass does). i will not use the high-eq much anyway.

i also see it as a little drawback that the ags increases the output a little. you cannot change between flat, eq on and ags on without a difference in output. that is the same that bothered me with the micro bass. but i will life with that.

the tone hammer is of very high build-quality, very sturdy and solidly made. like a "hammer". again betten than the micro bass with its thousands of knobs and switches.

yesterday at rehearsals i put it in front of my db750 and had all the sounds i really need without a lot of tweaking. i didn´t use the poweramp in on the db750 since you loose the possibellity of changing the volume if the tone-hammer is switched off. it works perfectly right between the instrument and the amp.

i just got my tone hammer. pretty freakin cool, only done 1 gig with her so far, got anothery tonight, will post more following.
1st reaction - with mids out a fraction, i was getting lovely modern tone, almost miller-like. didn't really tweak too much though, sounded great. AGS was too big a jump volume wise going from the clean sound, but what a mighty dirty tone, awesome.

got mine from rudy's nyc. it was his last one, there was plenty at the factory though!! Those guys are very cool. they were packing up a heap of them.

i was going to agree with munji and humble, but then i realised they were quoting me. it's a little bit of a bummer actually, unless maybe you're playing aggressive stuff where you need a big jump from clean to dirty. an ags level knob would be cool.

Would you guys say that a preamp stompbox is an essential part of your rig?

I never had one and almost don't want to find out how nice they might sound.

My amp is a Yamaha BBT500 and it sounds great for a digital amp. I like not having much gear to get a great tone but am always interested in what will work even better.

Even with 11 different amp settings and parametric EQs I want to be able to get a huge tone.

thoughts?
