Akai SB-1 Deep Impact: Settings and info

I noticed the Excel file is missing, so I'll offer this to anyone.

The first thing I did when I got the pedal was to take it apart and inspect it. Although the outside is road worn, the inside was in great shape; all cold solder joints looked fine and the unit performs perfectly. Merci Jazz!

I posted an xls file earlier, but half of those sounds have changed. I have not updated the file yet because every time I sit down with it I tweak presets 6-9, of which I don't have a use for yet. I have a few cool ones that I'll share soon. I've been messing around with the DI combined with a DL4...getting some awesome sounds on the delay modulation settings using an exp pedal

I have an SB1 I bought brand new back when it first came out. I've barely used the thing and it's in mint condition.

Just curious what this thing may be worth.....seen them on ebay for 350 and higher

To the top. Please take 15 minutes out of your day and copy some settings down for all of us. Let us know the bass used, and the settings, and possibly a name if you have one (all of us call our patches things)...

I want to complete this thing up, and I am almost at a full page. I am going to redo this excel file and work on some new ones soon.

I have played professionally for more than thirty years (especially DB) without imagining the existence of effects, then recently I decided to try a compressor, you imagine the end of the story ...
Now I got more than 35 pedals, mostly vintage, (I remain analog for biographical reason), I love my Deep Impact and would like to use it at his best, for this reason I am grateful to those who can give advice and new ideas on the setting of the beast .

Just picked one of these up. Looking forward to trying the settings in the spreadsheet.

Initial comments:

* Really does work and sound good. Not $1000 good. But really good. :)
* Extremely intuitive to use.
* Much larger in size than I thought it would be.
* No label on the pedal to indicate power draw requirements. Found somewhere on the net that indicated 180mA which is very low.
* Has to be a wave shaper not a pitch tracker as it simply tracks too well. Effects open strings including open E, effects when feeding it non-clean tones like an OC-2 at the 12th fret which is typically wobbly during the decay. As with most synth fx putting an OC-2 in front lets you blend in the raw OC-2 tone for extra fatness.
* Has to be a wave shaper as it retriggers too well.
* Mine doesn't have a 100% wet balance, and some of the voices seem to have more/less of an inherent blend than others. Can anyone confirm this?
* Seems the Markbass Super Synth borrowed a lot of the UI ideas from this box. Not sure why they couldn't provide a hardware UI to control the parameters.

It truly is a great synth pedal, my favorite by far. I'm looking for a backup just in case something goes wrong with my original. Would have loved to have found that one on CL for $150. Great find! Anything around $500 is good these days and they can go as high as $1000. Wow! Again, GREAT find man!

Some settings for you guys to try. I did not specify Note On/Off as that is a global setting that you should configure for your own playing style and instrument. Nor level or balance.

If I ever get a time machine, one of the dumb trivial things I'll do with it is go back to when these things were $99 on clearance at Guitar Center and buy like 10 of them.

Thanks for the new patches. I think you are the first to post anything in forever.

I'll add them to the spreadsheet soon, and give you credit. They'll be labeled: "Gastric Patches"

Ok. So I just spent 2 hours updating the spreadsheet. I fixed it to be consistant and easier to read, and gave credit to everyone who contributed their sounds to the document, and added my own.

I would like to get more settings. I want to make this document so complete, it is a reference material for all new fans of the pedal, and something others look for to spice up their tones.

Please, contact me here, or via email to add your settings. I will give you credit, and make sure every note you list is included.

Thanks for starting the sheet. Good idea. :)

I'll have more to share eventually. I personally omitted note on/off as that's a global setting, and balance and level as those are really preferences for the patch. I normally have Balance = 9 always, but that's just me.

Question: does Balance = 9 on your unit still allow some clean through?

Could you do a quick test for me with yours? I always hear a tiny bit of clean leaking through with Balance = 9. It's not a deal killer, mind you. I was just surprised to not hear it fully 100% wet. It's less noticeable on Program = 6 due to the octave shift and fatness of that voice, more noticeable on some of the thinner/higher focused voices. Haven't gotten around to sound clips yet, eventually will try to record some to demo the presets I've documented.
