Albums that absolutely BLEW...

I love both of those. Especially #II which I think is excellent. I also love "chinese democracy" which I believe doesnt get a fair chance because of band politics rather than being judged on the music.


When it comes to big rock bands none have disapointed as much as Metallica. "and justice for all" - excellent song but I nevel listen because of the production - its bad. St Anger - I fell for the hype and got this. The songwriting is so bad and there are almost no good riffs. It isnt even performed up to standard. And then of course the mastering disaster with Death Magnetic. While I think they should have spent alot more time on the flowing of the riffs it does have its bright moments but man it is unlistenable because of the sound. Crazy that all this has come from one band - the biggest metal band of all time nontheless.

i also love chinese democracy. it's not really comparable to vintage guns, but it's great none the less.

i liked st anger, but will agree with the other poster that invisible kid is a horrible song, and one of the band's worst.

Death Magnetic is cool, but does sound terrible. what gives????

I heard some of chris cornells dance crap he did on a virgin america flight last week. Absolutely horrible.

Last album or two from pearl jam hasn't been that impressive to me.

Anything weezer, I just don't get the cult following those clowns. They suck IMHO.

I am sure there or more, but its too early to think of anything else.

I like the album a lot but I'm with you on that. My understanding is that Death Magnetic's dynamic range was seriously compromised due to over-compression. The following link sheds some light on the matter: Invalid Link Removed There is a rip of the Guitar Hero: Metallica version floating around which sounds way better. I can't even listen to the original anymore.

That's not the primary reason. I think the biggest difference is that the drums are recorded with a single mic (maybe two) across the room from the drum kit. Also, the bass seems to have more of an "amp" sound rather than a direct sound.

Frizzle Fry, Seas of Cheese... etc, were all recorded to tape. Digital stuff sounded like crap back then.

As I stated earlier, The Brown Album was their tribute to Tom Waits (they said so themselves) so they used many of his recording techniques on that album.

... adding to my original reply to this. I remember reading when the Brown Album came out that they recorded it using a slow tape speed. Maybe 15 IPS. This makes for lower fidelity. Perhaps this is what you meant.

Among artists I generally like, KISS' "Unmasked" was horrid.

I am in the minority on this most likely, but I was extremely disappointed in "Dose" by Gov't Mule.

I recently obtained a CD called "Quiet Riot - The Randy Rhoads Years". I wish I hadn't. Randy, IMO, is the ultimate guitar player. I now see why these recordings stayed unreleased all those years.

I am a huge W.A.S.P. fan. Go ahead and giggle, but I really love what they do. That being said, my life would be every bit as rich and pleasurable if they had never released the Neon God CDs.

Pretty much anything from Iron Maiden after Seventh Son.

Fun thread. I agree with most of the albums mentioned so far, although I did like Load from Metallica.

I generally hate albums of "unreleased and finally available" material. Generally there was a very good reason the material wasn't released :rollno:

These albums are almost always done to try to milk a last few dollars from a dead or dying band.

I have an album called Monkey Pocky Boo by Sonny Sharrock. Its an hours worth of freeform jazz, completely unmusical. Sonny seems to have pulled a Lennon and allowed his girlfriend to scream and yell over the top of completely unstructured noise coming from (I think) a drumkit, electric guitar and double bass. Its horrible.
