The are not used for their original purpose anymore ... well, may be ... , but you will still find them on many old farms.

I made another handle for another ebay cheap tool....
This time it's a set of nut slot files.... but not the nice, big, "real" file type.
It's these little gauged wire,... file things.
Surprisingly...these actually work on brass!
I'm sure not as fast as a real file...but they do work
My hold-down screws in the middle, wound up being a bit ....off center...
Ok, ok. ..ALL the dang holes are off.
But, hey....it still works!
Every bass I build from now on will have an adjustable nut!
(Probably )
And hopefully my drill won't wander so dang much on the next one

Oh...my....gosh.... Did I actually pay $15 For a half set of $5 tip cleaners?.....haha....
Actually, I don't think they are...the serrations on the "nut files" are considerably sharper than tip cleaners, although they are VERY similar.
Tip cleaners:
They are the very same gizmo... (those do have an eye hook at the end, they just dont show it on ebay. The description says they have an "L" shaped end, but these are what you get.)
Honestly, I was really surprised they worked at all on brass.
They would litterally take forever to cut a deep slot by themselves, but what I did was cut an initial kerf with a hack saw ...almost to the depth I wanted. ....then chased it with the files & they worked really well.
I assume they would be great on a softer nut material.

Do the set screws extend down into the neck, or is the nut just held in place by string tension? I bought a pre-slotted brass Ric bass nut for my build, figured these nut files would be good enough to widen or deepen slots. I can't believe how overpriced most nut files are.

The two inner Phillips head screws go through the nut, (non threaded holes) and are threaded into a thin brass plate underneath the nut that is glued into the slot. They are the "hold down" screws. (See first picture )
The two outer set screws, (small allen wrench) are threaded into the nut itself, and the plate underneath them is solid. They are the height adjustment screws which push the nut up. The hold down screws must be loosened before any adjustment is done, after which they are retightened.

That's pretty slick! I thought I was looking at some kind of bridge saddle in the first photo, I get it now. Possible to use brass screws for the center two just for pure cosmetics, or would they be too soft? I've sheared off more than my share of brass screws.

I don't see why not... they don't really need to be torqued down ...just snug.
I was thinking a couple drops of blue locktite is in order ...just to keep things from vibrating loose.
As far as cosmetics goes ...I was thinking a couple of #4 socket head cap screws ...with the head countersunk flush
Although. ...
Having them actually centered in between the gooves would also be pretty ....... groovy

Nice! It certainly beats paying Warwick crazy amounts of $$$ for their 'Just a Nut'!

So I made this tailpiece out of brass... took me all day, I kinda dig it.....
But.... I'm second guessing myself & wondering if the break angle is steep enough.
I could go string-through, with holes right next to the bridge to make it a steeper angle. But then I won't get to use my tailpiece ....
This would be absolutely the most angle available.... & it may even be a tad less once I set up for good action.
Any thoughts??
