What the control layout on your bass? Looks to me a variation on a Series II. Is the hum canceller hidden?

yeah it's a seriesII layout,& the hum canceller is inside the body.

I *almost* picked up a 77 Series I four stringer a while back, but decided that I really would prefer a 5.

I'm not counting out a Series bass at some point- I just wonder if I would ever quit turning knobs and actually do something productive. :) I find myself playing with the filters and pan for hours on end- the electronics are just so sensitive and responsive- I think if I had more to play with I might never come up for air.....

I think once you get used to the Series I or II electronics, they are pretty intuitive to use. To me, the electronics on a Fodera seem like they'd be a bit more difficult to dial in desired tones (definitely beautiful basses, though).

Are you kidding?:eyebrow: Grab the E-string tuner, and twist...it works out to be the same thing.
The beauty of the Series design is that you don't have to reach for the knobs. Granted, if you want to you can, but if you change the angle and position at which your fingers strike the strings the tone changes dramatically. With the Series 1, you have six controls other then your fingers to mess around with. With the Series 2, you've got 10 fingers and 8 controls. If your tone isn't right, I'd venture to say it isn't the bass' fault.

Here's the only extant pic of the Series I I played for a couple years around 1980. I've written about it in another thread; suffice to say we didn't get on at all. I really made an effort to like it, but in the end the best thing to do was to trade it in, which I've never regretted. As has often been said, Alembics aren't for everyone.
