Alembic Series I. 77' vs. 97' -Sound Test

The CLIP posted is of two Alembic Series I basses. One is a 97' and one is a 77'.

Can you tell them apart by listening? Which is the first and second? Which do you like?

One is Shedua over Cherry and the other is Walnut over Mahogany. Neck woods are the same.

I'm guessing the second one is Walnut over Mahogany, that's the '97 right? I have one that has the year numbers reversed ('79) and that one sounds closest...
Both are sounding great, slight preference here for the second -better setup/or raised action- cleaner sound. Though if a song needs more excitement, the first one could be the better choice

I'm too lazy to go through the Talkbass rules, but aren't pics mandatory in threads like these?

I haven’t listened to the clips yet, but just based on what I know about Alembics I would think the walnut-over-mahogany is the ‘77 ...because I’ve never seen a Series I from the late 70s that didn’t have a mahogany core.

I have a ‘76 Series 1 with a koa core... and a birch neck!

I don't feel comfortable giving you my honest opinion just from listening to sound clips I need to have them both here with me that way I can feel the wood and give you a proper evaluation I think two months is enough time.

The first one in the clip sounded nicer to my ears but they both sounded great. I would have assumed the walnut and mahogany bass was second because the second clip sounded a little darker to my ears, but I see I was wrong! You have two beautiful basses there, enjoy them.

I guessed opposite...I dug the 97 more based on the 15 seconds.

Here's a better demo of the two Series I. Same strings and settings w/ reverb. Only difference is 77 is in mono (since I don't have a box at the moment) and 97 in stereo with reverb on the bridge p/u.
