Having learned this song, I'm going to move onto the next one. And instead of deleting this terrible thread, I'm going to leave it up as a reminder to never post about learning a song again.

Terrible thread? I think it’s great. I’d been thinking of bars 5 & 6 (if counted in 6/8) as C7/G but learned that it can be looked at as being modal (mixolydian to dorian). Very cool.

I'm quite glad you started this thread. I've been playing this song here and there since the late 80s, and I've learned all sorts of good new stuff.

Take the comment as IMHO and YMMV.

I started on upright and played it through my professional career. I feel 2,1,2 is much stronger than 4,2,4, but YMMV.

I grew up on Simandl and 4,2,4 (G,E,F) is considered half position. As far as I remember, half position is taught after you learn first position.

As a veteran player I completely stopped thinking in terms of positions. I also eventually abandoned pivots on upright as I never could seem to use them to my advantage. Oddly I use them quite a bit on bass guitar. I also use one finger per fret on bass guitar...and feel 2,1,2 is strongest option for this pattern.

Definitely going to be an IMHO and YMMV for most fingerings of any song. I forgot that it was called 1/2 and not 1st position, so thank you for that correction/reminder! I was taught half position first. I definitely use one fingering (1/2 position) for playing All Blues on upright as it feels much stronger to me, but use 1st position, or the way you prefer, for playing this song on electric bass.

Out of curiosity I tried to find videos of the OG All Blues bassist, and he sure makes 1/2 position look strong on this song.

IMHO, as long as you can get through the gig without excessive hand fatique, it's good.
