New Sonys. Still the best value for the price imho. I forgot which ones but it's the $100 pair that rocks and isn't too prohibitive.

Yeah, the squeal comes on so fast, it's just not worth running it on the battery. Especially uncomfortable if you're practicing with headphones. I always plug mine in.

You can run it on battery without problem using rechargeables ones.
At home I use it plugged in my Pedal Power 2 Plus.
I use it with a Panasonic rechargeable battery in my garden. My scales sessions last for around 3 hours and the battery is far ok

The fact you can plug really anything you want in it make it much more convenient than the usual small "headsets amplifiers".. and the sound.. the sound...
I use it with irealb on my mobile phone plugged in the aux entry, a tuner (an inexpansive Korg great for bass) in the thru output, and a headset.. perfect for practicing in the garden.

When I got my DI, I also bought a rechargeable 9v and charger for the same reason but found that 3 hours wasn't enough since it would have to be recharged every time you practice. Unscrewing the back, charging overnight (or whenever) was a hassle. I only bought 1 rechargeable 9v because they pricey. And the sudden battery depleted 'squeal' through the headphones isn't fun. If you could recharge it without removing the battery, had a battery indicator on it, and no squeal I would use it more in DC.
My little plugin Vox can go for weeks on 2 AAA if I want to sit out far away from an outlet. Sure the tone isn't the same, but I'm usually doing stuff like scales, etc.
Not to say that what you're doing wouldn't or doesn't work. It just personally drove me a little nuts. Now, I just use it as a headphone amp plugged in to the AC or as a DI live if needed.
Added mine to my pedal board running into an SVPCL. THE SCR-DI has a great sound and I use the scrambler circuit alone with the SVPCL (cause the SVPCL to damn clean alone). It's also great as a practice amp with headphones. I use the Big Muff Pi for the creamy distortion (od).

Hi, I'm new to bass but just ordered one of these because it just makes so much sense! I've watched several demos and am wondering about good base settings for achieving Portaflex and/or SVT tone. Any recommendations? Or is it just plug and play and you're in the ballpark of one of the two amps all the time? Thanks!

It is and it isn't. You will no doubt want to experiment with the knobs, but it's extremely easy to find really good sounds no matter how you turn the knobs. My advice would be not to get too hung up on SVT or B-15 sounds. I get the same basic sounds out of both. Just concentrate on getting a good sound that's to your liking.

Can someone tell me what size the barrel connector is for the SCR-DI pedal's power adapter socket? Is it the more common 2.1mm inner diameter and 5.5mm outer diameter?

I don't know the measurements, but it is the typical effects pedal size.
One more question for this group: does anyone happen to know if the SCR-DI's XLR balanced output has sufficient voltage to drive a SS power amp that has a 1.25v input sensitivity?
Cool! Thanks! The Carvin HD3000 has a 1.4v (@8 ohms) input sensitivity. If the Ampeg SCR-DI is adequately driving that using the 1/4" line out, then it would drive a power amp with 1.25v input sensitivity even moreso. And according to the Ampeg website, the SCR-DI's XLR balanced out is 6db hotter than the 1/4" line out which means the XLR balanced out provides quadruple the power (twice the voltage) as compared to the 1/4" line out. So it would appear to me that the SCR-DI will drive a power amp with aplomb, especially if using the XLR balanced out!
