There's a lot of condemnation of the new song, and AI's role in it, and the video, being posted in the thread New Beatles Track With A Little Help From AI. Some even seem to believe that AI had a great deal more to do with things than has been publicized. I prefer not to jump into that, but give my opinions here instead.

The idea that John didn't do more with the song after making the cassette may, or may not, indicate that he didn't think much of it. But, then he often denigrated hit Beatles songs after the fact, too. And I don't think 2-3 years was an unusualy long gestation period for some of his compositions. He might've come back to it later, if only ... But I must admit, though, that even yesterday's new release audio doesn't strike me as all that great, not to mention the original cassette version.

Paul has had a very deep emotional tie to the phrase "now and then" since the '70s and, obviously, to John's song since the '90s. Even more so since George passed. So, of course, he needed to "finally do something" with the song as some sort of closure with John & George, if nothing else. In that respect, the audio is a very nice production. And sharing it publicly as "the last Beatles" is a very touching thing. Despite all the inevitabe cynical commentary, this really needed to be done.

But, to me, Peter Jackson's music video is what really brings the song to life! I posted above that his talk about making the video brought tears to my eyes - creating, in me, a lot for it to live up to. But Jackson did it! And kudos to Pete Best's contribution, too! Sure, the pathos is a given, but capturing the irreverent and funny Beatles too, especially with video juxtapositions, is a real triumph, IMO. I love the music video!

Agree wholeheartedly @G-Dog , I watched the film clip on my phone while my wife was at the shops this morning and when she arrived home told her she had to watch it with me “it makes the song”!
Absolute genius film clip.
I have watched it four times today, 2x then 2 more via reaction videos.

This is a pretty good take IMO on Now and Then played in the style of the early Beatles.
The first 55 seconds or so is kind of boring as a neo Ed Sullivan type introduces the band but once the song gets going then it gets interesting.

Yep. Without them, I venture to say there may never have been a TalkBass. How many of us here became music lovers because of the Beatles? And passed that love along to our kids? And our grandkids?

I wonder if Apple Corps is taken by surprise by the multitude of covers, both original and AI. There doesn’t seem to be much they can do about it.

Or I could be wrong. Maybe they see it as a good thing.
