Aluminum Neck Club

I'm looking to get an aluminum neck. Are there any problems with temperature changes? Hot days, long play times, etc? That's something I keep seeing pop up when searching, but none of yall have posted anything about that.

I haven't noticed anything with temperature changes affecting the neck, which is one of the benefits. They do feel colder in winter, but I've never found it to be an issue.

FWIW, my Alef neck was polished when I received it and I found that my sweaty hand would stick to the back of it, much like a glossy neck. A green scrubby pad to the back of it took care of that. My Aluminati neck is brushed with an anodized finish, and my hand doesn't stick to the back of it.

I also like the hollow necks due to the reduced weight. Some of the solid necks weigh about 4lbs, and you'll need a heavy body if you don't want any neck dive.

Dope. Yeah, a standard maple neck weighs about 4 lbs with tuners as well. So, no big difference there. I appreciate the response man. Thank you.

Room temp isn’t a problem, as long as the neck is somewhat acclimated to the ambient room temperature you will probably have to do a quick re-tune tweak after playing on it for a few minutes (the heat from your hand will warm the neck up a bit.) But yeah, once the neck’s in tune after playing for a bit if you just leave it alone, the next time you play it might be slightly out of tune when you pick it up but will be back in tune after playing some. If that makes sense lol. Worth it for the overall stability and omg not having to tweak a rod will spoil you (speaking from personal experience here haha)

Got my fretless Hoxey neck yesterday morning. I was told an 8 week lead time and was surprised to see it arrive 4 weeks early. My only set of spare tuners won't work as they're a 2+2 configuration. I'll have to pick some up this week and try to decide what strings I want to use.

I've got a Kramer bass with aluminum neck. Temperature never seemed to bother the bass, but putting my hand on a cold hunk of aluminum just out of the truck in January was a memorable experience.

Silly question regarding the Hoxey. For the tuners, the little pieces where the screw goes does this need to be removed? If so, how do they come out? I tried to screw in the screws that came with my tuners (Leo Quan Badass SGT's) and they didn't fit and I tried gently to unscrew and pull these out.

I've had this in the works for some time now, and teased it on here once or twice. A couple months ago I finally got to stringing up the proof of concept / test pig.
The body is just a Fender chop job, with some pickups that my friend wound, a hipshot bridge and some new tuners I designed/am testing.

The neck is made by Robot Graves and features his characteristic thin/flat profile. it'S 33" scale length, 24 frets, and headless! I'll be designing a new model and offering a bunch of custom options around this neck, and there's a 31" 4-string counterpart in the works as well.

... Yes, it's heavy.

EDIT: It's strung E-C and it's heavenly for chordal and melodic stuff.

I've lurked on this site off and on for a decade, but I finally registered just now... I ordered a hoxey neck for my T40 six weeks ago and he just shipped it! I ordered an anodized black fretboard with side markers only, stainless frets, 2x2 headstock and I got the chambering option too. It'll strung with 135s in A sharp (guitarist is in D sharp)... I am very excited.

Looks tough! How do you like the neck radius with the chambered option?

The 9.5 radius feels great, and the nut width is comfortable - it's barely narrower that stock. It's hard to explain, but the fretboard edges have this bevel to them that feels just fantastic. With the Super Ferrite pickup and the aluminum neck, it weighs .2 pounds more than it did in stock form. The toasters are heavy tho.

I have a black anodized Hoxey for a maple T bird project body I am building, but I was curious about another neck for my P bass(also a shaved-thinner maple body).

It's a relatively new neck and a 5 string, built to fit FMIC pockets. I wonder if the string spacing would be ok? I'm a 4 string player, but a friend just got an 8 string guitar and it made me want to change my P bass' neck to have a 5 string bass.

I really dig the headstock design too - looks Stingray-ish with that tuner on the other side.

Best bet would be to hit up Aluminati via email and pick their brains on it. Their production is currently on semi-hold due to the hurricane that blew through Asheville but they’re super responsive and will definitely make a nut to suit your needs

Finally got around to putting this bass together after dealing with everything going on in Western NC.

2 piece alder RD style body by Rosser Guitars. Had the vol/vol/tone placed inline and the output jack off to the side like the original RD standard.

Olive drab nitro finish by BloomDoom Guitar. I love green on instruments and I've been wanting a bass in this color for a while. Dustin from BloomDoom was awesome to deal with. Nailed detail and amount I wanted in the relic. He was great with communication throughout the whole process and the lead time was was exactly as advertised. Highly recommend.

Added an extra picture with the neckplate that has a machined tapped strap button attachment. I had been looking for one forever and randomly came across Glendale Guitars out of Texas that sells exactly that. It was expensive but well worth it as the bass is perfectly balanced playing standing with no neck dive associated with RD/Thunderbird style basses.

Bass came in a tad over 9lbs, which is what I was aiming (hoping) for considering all of the pieces.
