Best bet is probably looking for good deals on eBay for a husk or loaded Squier body - good amount of sub-$200 listings atm. A while back a got a great deal on a player series loaded jazz body that's been my beater bass for a long time now. It's had several necks on it and now and is about to get a new Aluminati neck.

Aluminati neck has arrived
While messaging with Aluminati about certain specs and what not, I was browsing their dealer page and one of their dealers, Cool Guitar Shop (out of Oregon), had two of their inline necks in stock at a very appealing price with no additional sales tax and free shipping. Kinda hard to pass even given how close I am to Aluminati's shop.
This is hands down the best aluminum neck I've played so far. I've owned quite a few including custom work from Robot Graves, EGC, and an older Kramer. But one thing that always made end up putting them down was their weight. Forgot to weigh this one before I put in on my jazz bass but it's almost indiscernible once put together. Aluminati advertises their bass necks at 2.75lbs, which feels about right. Definitely heavier then your average bass neck but much lighter than what I've owned previously, and this for me personally makes a huge difference.
Fit and finish is perfect. Installing took zero effort (worth noting mine didn't come with a backplate, just screws, but I had an extra plate thankfully). Slightly chunky neck, more akin to a P from my experience, which I like. Very different feel from the super skinny RG necks.
Right now it's temporarily on my trusty beat-up Player Jazz. In the near future it will be installed on a custom Rosser RD bass body (with jazz routes) that I ordered recently which will eventually get a nitro job. Just figuring out what color(s) now

I have the 2x2 Aluminati with the carbon fiber fretboard, and I think it's around 2.5 lbs. I also like the lighter neck to avoid neck dive. With my heavy Alef neck, I had to go with a heavier body to avoid neck dive. With my old sore back (and I'm a smallish guy at 5'6"), a heavy bass takes its toll after a while.
I'm probably shooting myself in the foot, weight wise, with an RD body lol. But I've played them in the past and enjoyed them a lot as they fit my playing style. I was glad that Rosser was offering lighter alder bodies. But I'm hoping to keep everything at a reasonable weight (under 10).

OK, this thread is making me sad. My fretless Kramer 650B (lines on the neck) was stolen from our rehearsal room in Boston around 1992. I used to just stare at it sometimes, the walnut and Birdseye woods were so beautiful. I bought it used from a music store in San Francisco in the mid-80s. It came with a big and very heavy Anvil flight case. They told me the original owner was famous. Name on the case was Randy Jackson,at that time, I had never heard of him. If anyone sees her, tell her I miss her and still think about her. Sigh.

I put it on a 60s vibe squier body, which is loaded with a EMG Geezer Butler pickup. I hat to shimm the neck just a little, but other than that it is realy smooth, well fit and it plays and sounds real good. So far I am lucky with this one. Although I have to play/try it in band-context next week.

I haven't done the advanced calculus, but I don't think the RD shape has any more square centimeters than a typical 7ender style body.
The weight will really depend on what wood(s) you choose. And you can save a decent amount of weight by going thinner. I really like a body thickness of around 32mm.
