True, but at some low level the arse drops out of a turned down big amp. It can be recovered somewhat with EQ. Try it.

You may be right there. But... It is well known among audiophiles that are into vacuum tube amplifiers that said vacuum tube amplifiers sound warmest when operating at power. That's why there are 5 and 10 Watt vacuum tube hi-fi amps.
Right. Tube amps are a different beast where they do change tone as volume changes.

Technically it boils down to Hoffmans iron laws, the Fletcher-Munson curves and the workings of the dynamic loudspeaker. I would recomend a studio monitor, perhaps a sub/sat type with the bass tuned no higher than 30Hz. Then apply eq with some +10 to +15 at 30Hz down to +0dB at 500Hz. Now you will have a system with the potential to sound balanced even at neighbour friendly volume.

I like the approach but I don't know about the exact numbers. If his gear thunders enough at volume I don't see why a sub would be needed. Simply EQ the rig with a junker 31 band Rand with the low shelf if the existing Carvin EQ can't do what is needed.

I have a ton laying around that I'm going to test out, so I can report back my findings. I was able to do sound deadening and reduce total db in my home with just blankets as well.

No, the foam won't tackle sound isolation - I know because I had a soundproof room built. What foam does is deaden the room like you said.

If you want to truly soundproof a room, you need to add a lot of mass to an already existing structure. Blankets will help if you don't want to go all out, but foam, unless it's really heavy foam, will not. When I built my room, I did the room within a room method, and on the interior wall added a second layer of sheetrock with a product called Green Glue spread between them. I made sure to have a gap between the interior and exterior walls (super important to slow down and dissipate the sound waves) of about 4 or so inches. I had two doors installed as well with a gap between them and some weather strip on the doors. That's one way to do it, there are few other methods. Sound waves act like water, they go wherever there is an opening.

Yes you can dampen the room effectively by applying foam. Damping material will be more effective at lower frequencies if held in place some distance away from walls/corners. However foam/blankets/fibre insulation will only have a small effect on the sound that passes thru the walls and end up in your neighbours ears. Such soundproofing will require a major redesign of the room that carries the amp.

Nope. The first aspect to consider when building a sound isolated assembly is mass. Foam, by design, has very little mass. Anything with low mass will be useless for sound isolation.

We need to be careful with terminology here. Dampening and damping are not the same thing. Dampening, acoustically, generally means to reduce reflections and is exclusively an acoustic treatment term. Damping is the process of converting acoustic energy into thermal energy and is exclusively a sound isolation term.

I'm not sure this is good for you, I gave up playing clarinet as a kid because the instrument was vibrating my brain into halucinatory realms...

Could you have been hyperventilating? Or, not getting enough 02 to the brain? I remember when I was in the chorus in college we were taught to put our arms behind the backs of the people on either side of us in case somebody got dizzy. Especially on the back riser, it would have been quite a fall.
