Am I the best? Is anyone?

Congrats on the nomination!!! Oh... And the hot date.:meh:
I played bass in a band that won a battle of the bands contest hosted by a local radio station many years ago. The prize for winning was a $1000.00 and a chance to share the stage with The Charlie Daniels Band. I think the only reason we won was that we kept the crowd entertained when the power went out half way through our set... It was big ego boost and also landed us a 5 night a week gig that lasted for a year. I always though I was pretty good but I knew I wasn't the "best". Then I met a real bass player...:bag: I gave him my job and moved to full time sound guy.

Hi,

The value of art is intrinsically subjective and personal. The concept of "best" is not congruent with it, because "best" assumes the existence of some sort of universally-accepted system of values by which to objectively evaluate, along with each individual value's approximate ranking of importance, one to another.

Ha! Easy for you to say! :smug: :roflmao:

Thank you for your indulgence,

The San Diego music awards are happening tonight and I got sucked into going. Two of the bands I work with are nominated for "best" in their said genres. While I am proud of the work we do, I don't believe there is a true way to qualify any type of art or artist as the "best". How do you guys feel about these types of events? At least I have a hot date for the event, maybe she will be the "best" looking woman there.

Yeah, probably not realistic to say the "Best" but certainly appropriate to Best Performance, Best song of the year, etc. I am in favor of these award shows because it highlights some of the great bass playing out there and gives folks a chance to put a face with the music, which makes the music more personal for them. And you know, regardless of your genre, you're trying to get your music to relate to your audience and convey your feelings to them. So I think they are a good thing and CONGRATULATIONS on your nominations!

I agree! No way to identify the best as who mite be the best for me but could the worse for others!
BTW Congrats on awards! You mite not be best to some but you Must be doing somrething rite!☺

These kinds of local award shows are like rowing the boat, beating the bushes for promotions that keep the music periphery in business and to some extent, local music alive. Keeping the dream alive. So it isn't unimportant. Everyone knows it's just your band's turn today. But these events have to compete with so much stuff these days that they seem kind of insecure. There was much more money in the biz 20 years ago pre internet and corporate consolidation. (unless you are in a college city or a city with a scene)

I agree 100%.

Turning art into a contest is profoundly missing the point. And people giving each other awards is pretty much the definition of a circle jerk.

Hopefully you'll have a fun night and get more gigs or higher paydays because of it.
