Am I wrong?

I'd say you're pretty much being a jerk. He requested information, and you decided to mock him for it. It doesn't matter how irrelevant the information appears to be to you.

It might have been funny in conversation, where body language and vocal inflection can shape words, but on the internet, that doesn't always come through. So, even if you thought you were being funny, to me (and I'll bet to just about everyone else who reads the Fender Forum), you're just rude. Feel free never to come to me for information.

A guy in the Fender Forum wanted to know what gear the bassist from the band Europe used on tour in 1986...

Maybe it was Europe's bass players best friend from high school? Or his brother?

:):):) Maybe they just got tired of inane jerks with nothing to add to the topic (j/k j/k j/k) :):):) while using funny faces as an excuse :):):) for being totally clueless knobs :):):) with nothing to add but stupid comments :):):) which in the stunted :):):) underdeveloped :):):) unibrowed brainpan of the clod making the stupid comments :):):) seem like humor instead of the :):):) juvenile :):):) moronic :):):) waste of bandwidth :):):) it in fact is :):):) (j/k j/k j/k) :):):)

:):):) Please don't get me wrong...I'm just trying to inject a bit of levity here. :):):) Proof of this is all the smiley faces :):):) I added

Sheesh. Lighten up, people. My friends and I rag at each other all the time over our different musical tastes. At the end of the day, nobody gets upset because we all realize that something so subjective isn't anything worth getting offended about. My music collection is large enough and varied enough that there's probably something in there for everyone to ridicule. That's why it's my music collection and not yours. So you think it sucks. Whoopee. The world spins on and we're all gonna die some day, so why don't you focus on something that really matters.

In my world something is wrong if a question like this one doesn't get at least one snarky response. My advice to the OP: **** 'em if they can't take a joke.

Because you're friends, and you know each other. They way I act around my friends is not the least bit indicative of how I act around strangers, coworkers, or to people on the internet.

So you think it sucks. Whoopee. The world spins on and we're all gonna die some day, so why don't you focus on something that really matters.

You're right, it doesn't really matter if you like my music collection, or if I like your basses, or if you think I'm one ugly SOB. But even halfway-decent people don't run around the streets telling other people that their musicianship sucks or that they're husband/wife/etc is ugly as sin because that's beyond rude. That's one of the social favors that civilized people grant each other: even if we believe it, we don't run around offering uninvited criticism to others for their personal preferences.

In my world something is wrong if a question like this one doesn't get at least one snarky response.
Sadly, you're probably right. Except that 'snarky' is just a cute, sugar-coated word for jerk (and a bunch of other, non-TB-sanctioned words), which is exactly what the OP was being when he made that statement.

You are probably right, but the key thing about your statement is that you and your friends rag each other about musical taste.

So firstly, being your friends you have a relationship with them that probably goes back quite a way and is broadly based - not solely centred on one conversation.

Secondly, you already have that agreement with your friends that this subject is not worth getting mad about.

Thirdly, being your friends they doubtless have a good take on what your sense of humour is all about and probably find their own sense of humour overlaps with yours to quite a degree

Finally, you probably conduct most of your ragging face-to-face or over the phone where people can see your body language or hear your inflections (and if by text or email see points 1-3 above to set the context)

Totally different to somebody ragging on a complete stranger in response to a genuinely posed question. Sense of humour is often used to justify comments that may have been made in jest, but the essence of communication is not what you mean by your comments but what the recipient perceives.

People may well need to grow a thicker skin but that doesn't mean that others should set out to cause offence (intentionally or otherwise) in a unilateral effort to test their sensitivities.

Crazy enough, SOMEONE will know the exact specifics.....especially here on TB!
The amount of usless knowlage/trivia about gear/players that I myslef know and learned here on TB is flat out insane.
So, anyone know what he used????

The honest truth is that the guys in Europe don't suck, they were just excessively cheesy at a time when cheese was popular! They were all good musicians and I will admit to enjoying a couple of their tunes. I wonder what they are up to now?

Perhaps you could try keeping your world to yourself and what I assume is a very small circle of friends?

A guy in the Fender Forum wanted to know what gear the bassist from the band Europe used on tour in 1986. I dogged him a little bit, all in good fun - used laughing emoticons not shown here. This was my response:

Who cares? Europe sucked!

Do you really expect someone to remember what gear an insignificant bassist from an insignificant band played on an insignificant tour named after an insignificant song 25 years ago?!

Everyone got bent out of shape. Am I wrong for displaying a sense of humor?

Sense of humor :scowl: ?

You're not helping the guy, you make fun of him and even insult the band, and you call that humor? Woow...nice...

FWIW: IMO Europe was pretty good band; I bought my copy of "The Final Countdown" last year and even now those songs sound good; their look might have been typical for that time period, but the music was and still is good. There's no need to diss a band that actually played better and with more sense that most of the bands of the time...but hey, we can trash everyone and everything for the sake of "forum humor"...right :rollno: ? Pfff...

God bless the Internet and the anonymity it grants us all.

Some folk need to just chill the **** out.

ALL message boards are exactly that...message boards. You type in a message, press return, then check back to see what some random Internet nobody has replied. Then you decide whether to a) cry in your room because 3 days later you've only generated a 2 reply thread, b) laugh at the hysterical over reactions to a deliberately provocative thread or c) engage in some genuine, honest, intelligent exchange of views.

And let's be honest, there are plenty of folk who would not have the guts to say in person what they type on a keyboard.

Different people have different tolerances and thresholds. If you don't like something, either don't reply to it, or be prepared to have your limits tested.

Either way, no one dies....

LOL!

Isn't Talkbass PRACTICALLY the Fender Forum?

Oh no, not even close. I have absolutely nothing against that forum, and wouldn't want to start any "us vs them" nonsense, but I know people who were banned for asking questiions over there; simple queestions about differences between Japanese and USA instruments, and such. In the past, it has seemed very hostile in my opinion, possibly the most hostile instrument maker forum I know of, but again that is only one persons opinion and is worth the air it's written on. ;)

TB on the other hand is a much looser place and for the size of it you can definitely joke around quite a bit and most of us know it's joking around. This is much a friendlier place (again, usual opinion caveat).

Anyway the bassist in question ( the guy from Europe ) is named John Leven. He is pictured variously with Stingrays, P basses and a white yamaha BB-1000.
Took me 3 minutes to gather this info using my phone by looking at wikipedia and linking to his webpage.
If you wanted to rag on the kid you could have pointed out that since he was already online this info was readily available. Or you could have just been cool about it.

Agreed. Europe may be pure cheese, but one man's trash may be another man's wife.

And important to note that cheese isn't always bad. I love dream theater but sometimes I just want to listen to something less intense. Lately I'm digging Stryper!! Cheesy? Sure! Awesome players and good songwriting? You bet!
