Amazing Photos

Nice, did you take this mikie?

These are photos of the recent Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada fires. What a devastatingly sad disaster these people had. My heart goes out to them.

This was(is) a massive fire. It was powerful enough to cross a major river (the Athabasca) to burn parts of the city. They're saying that 2400 buildings were destroyed including the complete destruction of at least one residential neighbourhood. Damages are in the $9B range, apparently. The good news? They evacuated 90000 people safely and no one was killed by the fire. I think two people were killed in a highway accident related to the evacuation but it definitely could have been a lot worse. There are a lot of expat Newfoundlanders up there and I personally know two families who lost their homes. They started letting people come back yesterday and the rebuilding process is going to be a long one. Terrifying photos for sure. I'd say half the population of Fort Mac are originally from here. Mary Brown's (on the sign in the last pic) is a Newfoundland owned chain of restaurants and the only ones outside of the province are in Fort Mac and Brampton Ontario.

There are other Mary Brown's outside of Fort Mac & Brampton.
They have at least one in every province other than Quebec...

But yeah--that fire was horrific.
Heard on the news they are starting to let some people go back

I actually did not know that. I knew they used to have a few locations in Ontario and other parts of Alberta but was under the impression that they had closed most of them. Anyway, I loves a 3-piece with taters. :D

Hell of a mess up there, for sure.
