Amazing Photos

I took this one last Thursday at La Jolla Cove.

Why do I like this photo?
  • It’s clear what the subject is.
  • The subject is placed at the top 1/3 and right 1/3 intersection points which follows the compositional rule of thirds. Some might think it a bit contrived, but it works well here because the subject is moving ‘into’ the frame right to left (right 1/3) and flying (top 1/3).
  • The scene is uncluttered and makes good use of negative space allowing the pelican to ‘fly’.
  • The horizon line (where the sea and sky meet) is straight.
  • The viewer is unencumbered by a dominating sea, yet it’s still present, anchoring the scene.
